Product Details
Made in Germany, the blades on these bevel edge chisels are made from a premium quality chrome vanadium tool steel, which has high resistance to metal fatigue, to withstand the demands of chopping. Each blade is hardened to Rc61 along its entire length, resulting in a blade that will hold and retain a sharp, fine edge, over the life of the tool, without becoming brittle when sharpened. The blades are finely polished to achieve a mirror finish to minimise friction when cutting dovetails and cleaning delicate joints. The side bevels are finely ground to a narrow, tapered land for cleaning into angled corners and tight recesses. The blade and tang are forged from one piece of steel, which is seated deeply into the chisel handle for strength and durability.
The handles are made from slow growing hornbeam selected for its straight grain and strength and two steel hoops prevent the handle splitting or spreading when struck with a mallet. The handles have flats on the top and bottom for better grip and comfort.
This 6 piece set is beautifully presented in a fitted, solid beech box and comprises of 6, 10, 12, 16, 20 and 25 mm bevel edge chisels, with each chisel having its own location to prevent movement of the chisels. The chisels range in overall length from 250mm to 300mm. These premium bevel edge chisels are built to withstand hard use when chopping out mortice lock and hinges, yet are extremely well balanced for fine work in the workshop when cutting dovetails & cleaning delicate joints. This chisel set has a lifetime warranty and in the event that any chisel fails due to a material or manufacturing defect it will be replaced free of charge. ©

Bought as a birthday gift and very well received, so I am sure they will be a great success.

Before you open the box, you get the feeling there is a quality product inside and these chisels certainly do not disappoint. The steel is very hard and does take longer to sharpen but this is balanced by the fact the blade holds it edge much longer and you do get an edge sharp enough to shave with. In over 30 years of woodworking I have never used chisels that perfom as well as these.

The first mention must be the amazingly quick delivery by Rutlands. Ordered on a Friday (yesterday) at 3:45pm and arrived at 12:45 the next day - on a Saturday. So Brownie points there. I wanted a reasonable set of chisels that would be as multi-purpose as possible and these looked like a good bet. I got them at the sale price and with a further 10% off (although there was delivery charge but worth paying re see above) and for the money they're brilliant value. The blades themselves are nice quality, nice and flat and well polished, and the steel seems nice and hard and has taken a good edge. How long they hold an edge remains to be seen, but I have no reason to doubt the other reviews thus far. The compromise is clearly the handles - there's evidence of some cost cutting here, but they're completely functional and comfortable enough in the hand. The ferrules seem to be fairly substantial and the handles inspire enough confidence not to worry about giving them a whack, but most of my work will be paring so it's not a real concern for me. I've given four stars only because even at this price point I think the handles could be better finished, but the money's in the blade and that's all good and they do represent brilliant value. Thumbs up Rutlands!

I am a carpenter for the last 46 years. I can honesty say that these are the finest western chislels I have ever used.

A very good set of chisels to use and look at,pretty sharp out the box but with a little honing ,able to take and keep a very sharp edge.Particularly good feature is that the sides of the whole length of the blades are machined and polished to take off the 'sharp' edge which other brands fail to do which makes for uncomfortable chiseling and paring when holding the sides of the blade.Very tactile wooden handles and well balanced.Good storage box.

I thought I had a set of nice, sharp chisels (Irwin Marples), they are quite heafty so decided on a lighter set too. These are beautiful, you can't help polishing them the chrome vanadium is so seductive! Straight out the box they weren't as sharp as my Irwins but a brief go on my diamond stone and a little hone they came up SHARP. Sharper than I thought was sharpeningly possible!
Have yet to see if they retain that edge longer but just how sharp they come up is enough for me to be happy

Fantastic set of chisels.
If you like your tools to look great then these are the chisels for you. I tend to still reach for my marples as the hassle of getting these out of the box and running the risk of damaging the perfect hornbeam handles make me less inclined to use them!!
Only draw back to these chisels is it took a lot of flattening to get the backs right. The chrome vandium is great for geeping an edge and it hones really nicely, but that initial set up took a long time.

After buying these chisels, I now understand the difference between standard and quality steel. These tools sharpen up to a razor finish with very little effort and seem to hold their edge for quite a while. They a nice and light so you can keep working with them for quite some time and they are beautifully balanced. A joy to work with.

These are fantastic, I am currently on a cabinetmaking course, I just retouched the honing using a Japanese waterstone, wow are the sharp and they keep their edge for ages,Now the whole group are going to get them. Well done for sourcing such a great product. 10 out of 10

This is a fantastic set of chisels, I would thoroughly recommend them. The metal is Chrome-vanadium steel, which doesn't rust or oxidize over time. This is also a benefit because it can be polished to a mirror finish when sharpening and can hold their edge for longer than normal chisels. They are very well balanced and feel good to hold. They come in a very nice beech box with a spacer to stop them from knocking around and damaging each other. They also have blade guards to maintain their edge. If you're looking to upgrade your current chisels buy these, you won't be disappointed.

The photograph does not do justice to these chisels, they are 10/10, even the display box is superb. The polish and finish of these chisels is so good you can use them straight out of the box.

Sharp enough out of the box but a little extra honing much better and they seem to be excelling with that extra TLC - staying sharp long enough for my workshop visits.
Based on the reviews I had expected that the presentation box felt a bit more "premium" but that there is a box at all should be viewed as a luxury. Keeps them neat in the workshop, look forward to having them for years.
