Product Details

This utility drill guide is manufactured from ABS thermoplastic, a material commonly used for injection moulding applications where structural strength and stiffness are required. The drill guide is truly portable and offers the accuracy and control achieved with a drill press combined with the added benefit of being able to drill at any angle between -45° and 45°. The guide can easily be set up to drill perfectly true perpendicular holes. You can alter the drilling angle by releasing the two star knobs and then positioning accordingly using the calibrated scale, the angle is then securely locked off to ensure it will not change during use.

As all the main components are manufactured from ABS the unit is durable and hardwearing as well as being very stable during use. The head slides up and down on two steel bars and features a depth stop for repetitive boring. The base has anchor pins which can be used to stop the guide sliding on your workpiece during use. It also features a V groove for drilling round stock to stop it from rolling away from the bit.

The guide contains a 10mm capacity chuck and is supplied with a chuck key, the chuck is smooth to operate and provides a secure hold. The base aperture will accept drill bits and hole cutters up to 60mm in diameter. It will allow you to drill highly accurate holes at varying depths and angles without the need for a drill press. ©

Very easy to use, it could do with a more defined angle gauge numbers in white maybe

Adam @ ACS

Great for mobile accuracy, would have got 5 stars if I could actually read the angles numbers and see the marker! As previously mentioned easily resolved. I used Tipp-Ex to coat area, then lightly sanded area. Bingo, I can now see angles ok. Haven't tested for accuracy yet though

Great little quality tool. The base is plastic although it is very tough. If you are a heavy user perhaps go for the aluminium version. Its a handy tool to drill angled dowel holes in sheets that are too large for your drill press.

Bought this to improve accuracy. Have had spirit bubbles on the Drill for some time, but the drill can still wander slightly with the grain - this stops this. Agree with previous comments about the pointer and angle guides - they need to be more visible. The depth stop and centring pins are a nice addition. I needed one whic would work with a battery drill (which have awkward chuck collars - having an inbuilt chuck addresses this - however it would hav been nice to have a twist chuck, rather than a fiddly chuck key.
Delivery was quick too.

Excellent piece of kit, just one issue. The pointers and numbers on the angle guides both black. Used some white acrylic paint on both pointers and angle guides makes setting angle for drilling a lot easier.

Bought this with one of the dowel jigs to help making a coffee table. Did a brilliant job, it all fit together with no effort and will definitely be buying more from these guys. Excellent product and great price.

I needed this for building furniture with lathe turned parts and to be able to drill accurate holes in awkward shaped pieces of timber. After looking at some other (more expensive) options on the market I settled for this and so far so good. I have had no problems using this jig and can drill consistently accurate holes time and again. I would definitely recommend. Also delivery was super quick, even being in the highlands.

Malc Hardcastle

Nice and light yet machined accurately so there is no play even when drilling small diameter holes.

A good piece of kit for a very fair price. Small enough to store and worked very well on a few test uses yesterday. Pretty sturdy when all the adjusting screws are tightened down. Very little slop and certainly within tolerance for DIY use. A whole lot better than my attempts to hold a drill square, I can assure you! My cordless DeWalt fitted easily and the whole rig was very easy to handle . A little dab of grease inside the the plastic bearings at the base of the pillars (dis-assemble first) took out some of the original stickiness, making it a lot easier to adjust. An excellent addition to my tool kit. Recommended.

This is another quality item produced and sold by Rutlands. I have bought many items from Rutlands over the years and have never been disappointed in the slightest with their quality or value for money. All items I have brought from them have done what I expected and I will continue to monitor their website and received emails for more excellent things for my workshop.

Works really well with any of my Festool cordless. I greased the slide bars so that the action is super smooth.

This is a great piece of kit, with just 2 or 3 slight drawbacks. I got it specifically for some accurate drilling to accommodate steel rods for a custom built balustrade and it did the job wonderfully well. It took a bit of practice though. First there was the problem of getting it accurately to 90 deg. The gauge is not accurate enough and there really ought to be a specific stop for 90 deg. I spent a lot of time with a square and spirit level getting that right. There is also a fair bit of play in the chuck which I learned to overcome by avoiding movement of the drill when positioning the bit, and holding the drill lightly when in use. Lastly I found it difficult to hold the guide firmly in place when drilling on just a 45mm wide beam. The narrow, uneven base of the guide is difficult to hold down with much pressure. Certainly the locating pins help, but it was still a struggle. I was almost moved to reduce the score to 4 stars because of these niggles, but the given the price and the superb results I got, it's still worth 5.

I bought this to drill dog holes in a workbench. The main issue is the play in the chuck assembly - There's a few degrees in the x and y axes (with z going down the line of the drill bit), making a cone of potential angles you'll actually drill.

Depending on your experience you can drill just as accurate holes by hand.

If you have any chance of taking your workpiece to the drill, I would use a drill press (though recognise that the cost is several times this tool). Expecting drill press accuracy from this guide isn't reasonable. 90 degree holes are possible only via chance and experience of use, this does not guarantee them as I hoped it would.
Where I do think it could be useful is in drilling angled holes where the workpiece can't be taken to the drill press or the cost is prohibitive.

Very pleased with my purchase. Arrived the next day. Great to put in your toolbox for when not in your workshop.
Takes up little space.
Would definitely recommend this great tool.
The only thing I would say is that it is very difficult to see the angle notches. I think it would benefit from being painted.

Toby Collins

As mentioned by previous reviewers, the angle guide and calibrated scale are all in black, making it very difficult to quickly set the angle for drilling. I painted the sight guide with some acrylic paint and it was instantly obvious at a glance.
I drilled dog holes in my worktop bench using both a mains powered hand drill and a battery drill/driver. Both can be used easily with this guide, as the built-in chuck holds the drill bits. Other drill guides often do not allow the use of cordless drill-drivers because the keyless chuck prevents correct clamping.
It folds flat and takes up little space, is sturdy and quick and easy to use. Highly recommend.

Rob

Seems pretty good so far

Paul Carroll

Brilliant service as always, and a super tool. The basic guide is very accurate and plenty good enough for me. However, if you put a nonslip pad on the base and paint the sight lines white and you have a tool that will fulfil every need.

Paul Chaplin

am delighted with the sturdiness of this drill guide given the price. It is absolutely ideal for use with a cordless drill, unlike almost all other drill guides, and made a well-centred hole through two sides of stainless tubing.

The compactness of this is a big plus, and although I could have bought a dirt-cheap powered pillar drill / drill press for about Ă‚£60 (roughly twice this), it would have taken up massively more space and required plugging in. Not what I was looking for.

It has its downsides. The chuck key has nowhere to "live", and there are plenty of potential storage places the designers could have included. There is no apparent fixed stop at the 90° mark, but it is easy enough to get close enough.

Tips:

1) The spiked pegs can be screwed in from the bottom instead, to provide rotational stability stops

2) The hexagonal drive shaft accepts quick-release (e.g. Wera Rapidaptor) connectors, which makes attaching and detaching a cordless drill an absolute breeze.

3) And finally... the chuck key can be cheekily stored in the chuck itself, treating the torsion bar as a drill-bit and tightening the chuck finger-tight by hand.

Thank you to Rutlands for quick delivery and a great product at a good price!

there is a lot one can say about this tool so not to rap it up in just a lot of piffal I have to say this and I really mean it buy it use it you will not be sorry unless you are some great moaner who just has a moan about every thing, this will do your job for you all you have to do is hold it in place now what could be more easy than that I mean it what could be more easy than that its so simple to use made very well hard wearing use it any where you please carry it with ease in your over filled tool box light as anything what more can i say with out boring you to death.buy one but give you this warning keep it save as every one will want it and you may lose it when they see you doing dead straight holes with out any effort.
