Great for my little workshop.
Prompt next-day delivery of my new 9-speed 500w pillar drill. Bought at the reduced price of £99 was very good value for money. It came well-packaged and was very easy to set up.
It works very well and is easy to change to one of the 9-speeds available. Looks great in my little workshop. Looking forward to using it more and more over the next few years.
Definitely worth 5-stars, well done Rutland and thank you.

Bought this superb bit of kit for myself and my partner to use in our woodwork shed,we are delighted with its performance and was fairly easy to set up,lives up to Rutland's high quality and standard

I had been waiting for the day that this drill was on sale and my patience was rewarded. I can't fault it for the money. I bought it on sale but at full price I would have been just as happy. It does what I expect, which is to say it drills holes straight! I have now drilled countless holes for kitchen cabinet style cup hinges and once I set the depth correctly it was child's play and definitely saved me time over a well known US companies jig...
Feels solid and changing speed was easy. Very modest footprint for my small workshop but really punches above it's weight.
Like all of these type of drills, the area for workpieces is small so copying something from YouTube will improve that but I really can't find any fault. I had a question for customer support and received a helpful reply in around 1 hour.
Once again Rutlands has delivered.

Fairly basic, but does the job. Excelent value though, 5 stars for that alone. Top cover is a little tricky to remove and the manual could be better. I wasn't sure how to attach the chuck initially, but an internet search fixed that fairly quickly. All issues I am more than happy to tolerate at that price point.

Pillar drill arrived on time was well packed instructions were very easy to follow the drill was everything that I expected good control of the drill when operating has good travel with the drill very sturdy stand good movement on the drill plate

Raymond Cole

Already had a pillar drill but this had a more powerful motor, very pleased with it. Easy to assemble and a good solid machine. Needed to contact customer support and they came back very quickly offering help and support. Can't fault either them or the Piller drill.
Many thanks.

If you are looking for a small workshop pillar drill this is perfect. Great quality, decent power and a good size. I did add a wee bit of draft excluder to stop the lid rattling after reading other reviews but that's no hardship. It's a very quiet running drill now. I've been drilling 40mm holes in beech and it's not missed a beat.
Also worth mentioning the excellent customer service from Matt after I asked a ridiculous question about the chuck. Very promp and helpful.
Al in all I'd definitely recommend.

Arrived well packaged, simple to assemble and square the table. Only used it for light work up to now but no problems

Mr T A

The pillar drill arrived flat packed and was very easy to assemble, simply connecting the headstock to the main column, table and base. There is no play between the main quill and the casting, which is the most important part to ensure accurate drilling. The motor is powerful enough for me, I am comfortably able to drill 40mm holes in Oak with a Forstner bit. I also found it easy to switch between drilling speeds to suit my requirements. Really happy with my purchase and I would recommend.

I viewed a lot of pillar drills online before choosing the Rutland one, I am glad I did it is first class and has a stronger motor than most,I really can't say enough good about this machine, and at the price it feels like a gift, I have bought a lot more from Rutlands since and every item has been great, carry on the great work and please keep sending me the Email offers some cracking gear on your web site.

Speed is critical!!!!!
The size of the required hole and the material into which it is being drilled determine the optimum speed needed.
Gobsmakingly Obvious statements but both impossible to achieve with my old Nu-Tool 3 speed pillar drill.
Up until now I have never managed to find a machine that would do what I wanted at a price I could afford.
I HAVE NOW !!
Since it arrived I have thrown everything I can think of at it and it has delivered every time.
Yes there are machines out there that can perform as well or better BUT you have to pay the price.
Value for money this is unbeatable.

Mr J W

Well packed and on time. Easy to assemble and sturdy to use. Top bit of kit

Ian Silver

The drill arrived and on assembly it was noted that the movable table was not at right angles to the drill.
Returned and got a replacement table which had supposedly been checked.
The replacement table was not at right angles to the drill, was not even flat, and had a defect raised up in the centre.
Also, the bottom table is not cast iron as stated but thin pressed steel.
Am now returning whole drill - extremely disappointed.

Mr F

Great drill.

Ordered at 3pm on Tuesday, arrived 11am Wednesday, drilling at 11.45am Wednesday. Impressed all round.

Was setting up a workshop and considered many pillar drills this was on offer and delighted with the purchase. Allowed me to drill very accurate holes with ease and not massive so suitable for the space I have available. Had it several months and no issues whatsoever. I was very careful setting it up and no adjustments needed.

I've had this on my wish list for a while and as soon as they came back in I was on it. My favourite shop tool by far. As someone else mentioned the lid does have a little rattle too it but I added some double side sticky pads and all is well. Fabulous piece of kit

Mr A Harris

Very quiet motor and very smooth drilling action.

Bill Jarvis

I managed to get this when it was on offer, so a real bargain and vast improvement over the cheaper Ferrex unit it replaced. Assembly is easy and it's ideal for my home workshop and there's no play in the quil. The top cover rattled a fair bit initially, but that was soon fixed by adding some rubber draught excluder.

John Beaumont

Bought whilst on offer. At the price this drill is a bargain. Don't expect a high precision drill at this price but what you get is a drill well suited to the home workshop or light jobing work in a trade shop. There is a little play in the quil when at the maximum drilling depth and the machining on the table on my example was not very good and needed some fettling. Otherwise a well made machine.
I am a furniture maker and this drill does everthing I require of it just fine. At its slowest speed it will drill a 50mm hole in oak with a sharp Forstner bit. Can't ask more than that of a machine this size. Highly recommended.

Been pondering buying a small pillar drill a while for hobby use and bought this on Wednesday afternoon whilst on an offer.

PROMPT delivery following morning, well packaged. Assembled in under 30 mins with a spanner for column x 3 bolts and sprung washers. Small crosshead screwdriver for the clear guard, 2 supplied allen keys for other adjustments. handles screw in and hold fine. Chuck easy to fit with a bit of care and a tap with a rubber hammer.. Usual care required. Tilting platform scale sticker loose but easily sorted. Brochure typeface small and wasn't impressed as also for other machines. Pics not relevant and inaccurate for model. However none of that detracts from a solid bit of kit that was easy to set up and happy to give it 5 stars simply on quality v cost. Had several Rutland branded items and never let me down.

Will be bolting to a worktop in a dedicated space in workshop and if looking for a compact bench drill looks a good buy.

Having read reviews also added a rubber to top case simply to supress any rattle. Remember its a hobby drill.

Elliot Roberts

Was looking for a pillar drill on the sub 200 mark and came across this.
Brilliant bit of kit, especially at the current price. Ok, its not perfect, the top case was rattly when first used, but this was remedied with some rubber shims.
Brilliant value, I would highly recommend.

Alistair Boak

I chose this drill press for its small size, price, and good reviews. As mentioned elsewhere in the reviews, it arrives flat packed and is easy to assemble. Once adjusted it is quiet running and drills accurately. I needed to adjust the micro switch position in the gear cover as it was making intermittent contact, however, despite this, once setup I think it is an excellent piece of equipment and fulfils my needs.

Duncan Truss

I looked at a number of drill presses before deciding on this machine. There appears to be a multitude of brands priced below Ă‚£100. Some were appalling - you could actually hold the main spindle and move it side to side. This is the best I could find for the price. The motor runs smoothly and quietly and there is minimal play on the main spindle. In fact I used a 2mm brad bit drilling into oak and the hole with inline. The finishing on the castings is very good and there are no rough edges. So far very pleased with my purchase.

John Griffiths

Not had chance to use fully motor seems quiet
disappointed with base as it is only pressed steel most other units reviewed were cast iron have yet to bolt down to see how effective it is .It also seems to be the longer you wait the cheaper this unit becomes .Overall finish seems to be ok .Time will tell

Wayne T

When it first arrived I could not open the pulley cover to tension the belt. Spent half an hour trying without success. I phoned Rutlands and they told me to rotate the locking knob and then pull the knob sharply outwards. There is a safety switch in the headstock that prevents you from operating the drill with the pulley cover open. I wish I had read the instructions as I then made another call to Rutlands to say it would not switch on! Now it works a treat.
