Product Details
This premium quality, self centering dowel jig is manufactured from CNC machined aircraft-grade aluminium and beautifully finished in black electro-coating. This doweling jig automatically centres itself on any board from 10mm to 60mm wide. The jig comes with two sets of removable steel bushings for hole sizes 6, 8 and 10mm, allowing you to drill two holes of the same size at one setting.
The threaded bushes are manufactured from tool steel to prevent wear and play, guaranteeing a consistent and true drilling line. The bushes are used in the two holes on the left of the jig, with the two on the right being used for non-bush drilling of 11mm and 12mm diameter holes.
Open and closing of the jig jaws is smooth and consistent and the lead screw has a fast action acme thread. This dowel jig is extremely simple to set up, precise and very well engineered. The CNC machined dowel jig is supplied with 2 x 6mm guide bushes, 2 x 8mm guide bushes and 2 x 10mm guide bushes. Highly recommended by Rutlands. ©

As usual a superb product well made and very easy to set up and use. I bought it for a metalwork project and saved a lot of time using it. Game changer for me.

Torn between giving this 3 or 4 stars. But if I could I'd probably give it 3.5
I thought mine wasn't accurate so went about trying to adjust it. The instructs don't actually explain well, even the ones included in these reviews. What you have to do is loosen all the screws then turn the silver disc to adjust the distance on the outside fence.
The problem is, the central part of the jig is inclined to go a bit wonky and there's no way to fix that. All you can do is clamp the jig in place then push the silver cylinders this way and that to make sure the central part is aligned with the wood.
So accuracy isn't as good as I'd like it be. The wonkiness isn't great.
Apart from that the jig is nice and heavy and easy to use and allows you to drill at 90 degrees. So it does its job.

Fantastic ! I have just taken up woodwork for a hobby and used this to make my first interior table, it works like a dream, a heavy, quality bit of kit that I expect to last me a lifetime.

very good quality and love the self centring design to it. the only issue i have is i hoped it would have a dowel hole each side for the dowel inserts not two next to each other and the other side is the 11-12mm if the inserts went either side it would of made much more sense to me and also would of allowed me to have my dowels several inches apart much easier with little working out required

Not used it yet but it was delivered quickly and is very well made. I cannot see any reason to fault it and look forward to using it soon.
It would seem that it is worth reading the review given by Michael Scott below if there are any issues with setting it up.

Got this as a manufacturer seconds due to a defect. to be honestnot a big deal as the centreline markings were a bit off and easily corrected. Otherwise the jig works flawlessly and is a fantastic buy. Have been buying Rutlands tools recently and would recommend to anyone looking for good quality reliable tools.

This is a solid and well made Jig but mine arrived unable to self-center. Judging by other reviews this doesn't appear to be a typical problem, more a one off maybe but the instructions on adjustment to fix this are incomplete.
I was about to return it when I was contacted by Matt at Rutlands, he was extremely helpful in providing me with the crucial step missing from the manual in order to fix any misalignment.
"Please ensure all screws are relaxed, the top grub screw plus the two black screws on the side of the body. Then clamp a known parallel length of board and centralised the drilling block. Close the jaws until they are secured fully. Then retighten all screws. The jaws are now aligned with the central plate and centralised."
I also found that once the two black Allen screws are relaxed, the large silver nut on the lead screw can be manually turned for fine adjustment if needed.
This only took a couple of minutes and I now have a jig fully working as expected producing dead center dowel holes. Though I wasn't expecting to have to make any adjustments in the first place it was a minor annoyance.
Yes, the alignment lines can be a little hard to see but anything that makes me check twice is probably a good thing.

Solidly built, centres lengthwise well. Alignment lines for the hole centres are difficult to see and align with pencil marks.

I have not really had the chance to use this item yet but the quality and build look to be very good, as usual Rutlands service was extremely good with next day delivery and a good price. I have one slight niggle with Rutlands however after trying to contact them yesterday for some advice on another item, it turns out you can no longer contact them by phone. I know this is the way many firms are going these days but it does take the edge off what has always been excellant customer service,

What more is there to say other than I have finally impressed a very very sceptical brother who always knows of something better. NOT in this case but he will have to buy his own as this is one bit of kit that is not leaving my workshop.
P.S. It's also vey useful for marking the centre line on doors when fitting concealed bolts.

Simple yet effective also great for centring and aligning holes for supports in floating shelves.
The only gripe I would have is the black colour of the jig makes it very difficult to see the silver index marks when trying to align the holes up. Would have been better having a silver jig and black marks.
Other than that it works really well

Excellent piece of kit.
One improvement I would like to see: the index marks put also on the cutouts. When using with a wider piece of timber, it's hard to line up the index marks with the index line on the face of the timber

Very solid contruction and well made. Have only used it so far on a difficult repair application with narrow wood and it worked well. The only issue was that after drilling my third hole the centre block (with the dowel bushes in) become insecure and would have had impacted on the jig being centred. This was easily corrected by adjusting the middle allen screw; unfortunately the short instructions failed to mention this adjustment.

For the cost, this is an excellent jig. Its really solidly constructed & feels very substantial. The clamping mechanism is strong & easy to tighten & each drill guide feels solid & provides a secure position for drilling
Kerry Welch
Great tool. Used dowelling jigs for many years but wasnt aware of self-centring ones until recently. Could have saved years of time and frustration had I of purchased these earlier. The product is truly heavy duty and I dont imagine I will need to ever buy another one.
Josh Birch
It is so simple to use in comparison to my previous jig. There is virtually no set up required. Just insert the edge of your board and choose the diameter of dowel you want to drill out for. Clever.
