The hardened steel wheel features a single sided bevel that pulls the face of the gauge against the stock to consistently maintain a true cutting line.
The cutting wheel scribes and cuts the wood fibres cleanly, rather than tearing, resulting in a highly accurate line, even on cross grain in both soft and hardwoods. When not in use the cutting wheel retracts into the face of the gauge for protection.
The 40mm circular head of the guage is precision machined from solid brass and offers a stable platform against the stock edge to aid stability. The large knurled thumbscrew allows for fast, one handed adjustment and the transfer of measurements. The 205mm coated stainless-steel rod is cleanly etched in one millimetre increments up to 150mm, enabling precise marking out.

I've wanted one of these marking gauges for some time. They generally tend to be a bit overpriced for me but this one came at the right price. It scribes a fine clear mark both across and along the grain. It's also easier to use one handed than a regular marking gauge.

What a revelation! All these years using old fashioned marking gauges but since I bought this from Rutlands all my marking out is so so easy & super accurate!
My advice is if you're using scribe pin marking out gauges, either throw them away or display them as antiques!

These are proper good marking gauges. Solid and weighty. The markings are accurate enough to set the gauge without recourse to a rule. The knurled lock nut is easy and positive in operation, and the gauge marks neatly and cleanly. Delivery also excellent.

I am very pleased with this new marking gauge. The brass locking nut holds the head rigidly in position, which was a problem I incurred with my more expensive Veritas version. The blade is very sharp and leaves a fine and parallel line. I never trust graduated etchings so I always size with a rule. Exceptional tool for the price and I would recommend to any fellow woodworker.
