Product Details

Made in Germany, the blades on these carving tools are made from a premium quality, hand forged chrome vanadium tool steel, which has high resistance to metal fatigue and will last a lifetime if given normal care when relief or round carving. Each blade is hardened to Rc61 along its entire length, resulting in a blade that will hold and retain a sharp, fine edge, over the life of the tool, without becoming brittle when sharpened. The blades are finely polished to achieve a mirror finish to minimise friction when roughing out or adding fine detail. The blade and tang are forged from one piece of steel, which is seated deeply into the chisel handle for strength and durability. The tools are fully honed and ready for use or you can add your preferred bevel angle by further grinding.

The handles are made from slow growing beech selected for its straight grain and strength. The octagonal shape ensures a secure, comfortable grip and prevents the tools rolling on the bench. Every handle is permanently engraved with the blade's pattern number and size for easy identification. The tools measure approximately 240mm overall in length with a handle length of 130mm.

This 12 piece set was developed in consultation with professional carvers for both relief and round carving and is ideal for both beginners and intermediate wood carvers. The set is beautifully presented in a canvas roll with each carving tool having its own location to prevent movement and to protect the blades. The set includes #1 straight chisel 8mm, #1s skew chisel 8mm, #5 gouge 8mm and 20mm, #7 gouge 6 and 14mm, #7L heavy bent gouge 20mm, #8 gouge 4mm, #8a spoon gouge 10mm, #9 gouge 10mm, #11 veiner 3mm and #12 parting tool 6mm. This premium 12 piece carving tool set has a lifetime warranty and in the event that any tool fails due to a material or manufacturing defect it will be replaced free of charge. ©

Excellent value for money. Quite useable out of the box, but very good indeed when touched up and honed. Very good starter set for new carvers!

John Copp

A very good set of tools. The steel quality is spot on and comparable with other ones costing double.
As mentioned in other reviews the sharpening needs some comment, a couple of them were way off and took quite a bit of regrinding before honing.
Overall a great deal , as are the waters stones. :-)

Michael Boyles

Quality item at a reasonable price, delivered promptly, yet to be used in earnest.

Neville French

Beautifully made and presented in a nice pouch. Should provide many years of good woodcarving. A great product from Rutlands. Fast delivery and lifetime warranty.

Alun Davies

Had read some concerns on line that some of the set needed further honing. Personally, I am delighted with the set. Hardwood handles, good steel and supplied in a quality tool roll. At the price I paid these are a bargain. Will they require some work to get them as sharp as I wish-yes certainly. However, all chisels require regular honing. Sharpening and re-grinding are essential skills for all woodcarvers and woodworkers. If you are new to woodcarving these are ideal and if you are experienced, fettling them to attain an excellent tool is easy. Well done Rutlands. Great service and product.

Mark Goldsmith

Got these carving chisels a week ago. They are a good set, made very well, very pleased, another great product from Rutland's.Great service fast delivery. Many Thanks.

I have no problem with giving these tools the full five stars for quality and the standard of service l received concerning the website and delivery.
I was impressed with the roll they arrived in the finish and edge.....they were good to go!

James Lynch

Good looking set of chisels in a nice storage wallet.
Highly polished metal but certainly not ready for use. The set that I received was ground and honed but clearly this had been carried out by someone who had no clue what they were doing. The edges were out of square, particularly apparent on the wider chisels, and all chisels had the corners rounded over. The inner bevels were irregular and far too shallow, looking like that they had been done using a polishing wheel. Be prepared to spend a lot of time regrinding and honing these chisels before they can be put to use.

I am very much a beginner to carving and have been using a mixture of cheap and old carving tools. On the advice of a very experienced carver I purchased one Pfeil gouge at great cost. The difference in terms of ease of use and edge holding is enormous.
The various profiles in the set are exactly what I was recommended to get and I have found them equal in performance to the Pfeil.
In short this set is, to me, equally as good as my Pfeil and at a very reasonable price. I have no idea why a previous reviewer thought the price 'perhaps a little high' because according to my very experienced friend they are exceptional value for the money.

Michael Magnay

Good value as a set of 12- one-off prices perhaps a bit high...
Definitely need some work before using- most had burrs that needed cleaning up, and one was unevenly ground- there is no evidence of honing. Other than that, they are well made with a good finish. The decent tool roll is a bonus...

Nigel Roberts

Very happy with the different profiles supplied in this set, as a novice carver I find that I have every tool I would ever need. The steel used for the blades is superb, and holds an edge once sharpened and honed using good quality Japanese sharpening stones. I initially spent around 30 minutes finessing the edges to make sure they were perfect, time very well spent in my opinion.

James Cuthbert

I am delighted with the set of 12 as the profiles have been very well thought through to allow for initial roughing out though to finish cuts. I used a brass mallet when working on a hard piece of ash and the handle coped well without mushrooming. The profile on one of the gouges wasn't quite as i wanted so i quickly reshaped and honed it to my preference. Blades hold their edge. Overall very happy with these tools.

Rory Stevenson

Really happy with this quality set which came ready to use out of the box (or very handle roll). As with all of my carving tools I make sure they are ground to my liking, this was easily done and the steel was a treat to work with.

J Carter

Great set of carving tools. They cut very smoothly and leave a nice clean finish. Good choice of profiles.

Paul Smythe

Very sharp and did not require any pre-honing. Comfortable in the hand and no play or movement between the blade and the handle. Good blade length allows you to add a little bit of leverage if required with no risk of permanent distortion. I have used both for roughing out and finer detail work and they are proving an excellent choice. So far they are proving to be on par with my Pfeil tools in terms of performance. Only sharpened one gouge to date and it held its edge very well. Impressed.

Michael Emmerson

purchased these chisels and love them, extremely well made. arrived with a decent level of sharpness but spent a little time honing the edges further until they were razor sharp, very pleased and still adding to my collection - new hornbeam mallet next

Harry Browne

I have bought individual carving tools before but decided to invest in this beautiful set. They truly are a quality product, all sharpened and ready to use, and they come in a proper tough quality roll. Will definitely be buying more from this supplier.
