Product Details

This premium bench planer, can be used as a surface planer or as a jointer to produce a flat surface along a board's length. When used as a jointer, the machine planes on the narrow edge of boards, using the fence as support, preparing them for use as a butt joint or for gluing into panels. When used as a surface planer, the width of the bed enables you to flatten and level the faces of boards. Surface planing is often performed prior to edge jointing so that the board has a flat reference face for subsequent operations.

Powered by a quiet running 1800w high torque motor you can achieve an ultra smooth finish on softwood, hardwood and composite wood. Mounted in a balanced cutter block, the two high speed steel blades rotate at 12,000rpm, removing up to 3mm depth in one pass. By turning a dial on the infeed table you can micro-adjust the cutting depth to suit the hardness of wood being planed. On softwood you can remove up to the maximum 3mm in one pass and on hardwood and composite wood it is recommended to remove up to 1mm in one pass.

The 155mm wide surface table is made from a precision machined aluminium casting and the side fence tilts through 45 degrees for planing chamfers and angles. The planer blade guard can be moved and locked off both vertically and horizontally to cover the exposed blades. For added safety a no-volt release switch ensures that the motor will not switch back on after a power cut, without the operator pressing the on switch. A 50mm dust port connects to industry standard dust hose fittings, drawing dust directly from the cutter block to ensure an excellent clean workpiece finish.

This premium bench planer has 3 year warranty and in the event that the planer fails due to a manufacturing defect, it or its components will be replaced free of charge. ©

I had read/saw a few reviews about this unit before purchasing. Some concerns were flagged RE the fence, I'd like to begin this review by stating that after several months of use |'ve had no issues with the Rutlands fence.

This unit has completely changed my capabilities to work wood. As someone who uses pallet wood, this is a MUST have tool to get the boards into a workable condition.

Good little bench planner, light to move around and does a good job. think i need a better blade setting jig than the one that's in the box though. and as normal quick service from rutlands as always.
very happy with planner.

Why did I struggle so long with my block and electric hand planers??
At 155 mm wide, this little beauty does 95%+ of "domestic" tasks and, with a 3mm max cut on soft woods, will do them pretty rapidly and to an excellent finish. A top quality product, which with sensible use, should easily out last the generous 3 year warranty.
Rutland Power tools really do take some beating for quality AND value. I just wish they were nearer, but then I'd be a lot poorer ;)

Roger Turnbull

One of the most unique machines in my workshop.
I can now use it to make the most of my off cuts of oak ect.
It also has a setting tool included to make blade changing user friendly and the FINISH, well its the the best.

John Redditch

I have been using this little beauty for the past few months. It is so easy to set up, safe and leaves a lovely finish on both hard and soft woods. Much easier to use than an electric hand plane and superior results as the planer tables are longer ensuring a more accurate finish.

Usual quick delivery on time.
Not used the planer yet, but assembles into a good looking machine and not to heavy to move easily into storage when necessary

Clive George

Lightweight planer, delivered less than 24 hours after ordering. Small and compact with good performance from the 1800 watt motor.
Excellent planing capability on the construction timber I was using.
Fence is a little flimsy looking but stayed square throughout once set.
Needs feed rollers on the input and output side if your looking to square longer length timbers.
That said worked well out of the box for a lightweight planer at this price point

Great planer at a great price, i have been looking at this planer for a few weeks and then price drop
for one day. So i ordered one arrived next day (excellent service as always), on unpacking i noticed
some damage, i took a few images attached to email, Rutlands replied with in 2 hours very sorry etc
and would i return it, which i did, a few days later a new planer arrived.
Unpacked, assemble in no time, a brilliant planer for the price you can't go wrong magic finish makes woodworking so much easier. A few reviews i have read have mention a flimsy fence as long as you
tighten correctly it's fine. Highly recommend.
Many thanks to the team at Rutlands.

I'd been looking at getting one of these for a while and when it came up as a 24h price drop I thought I would take a punt.

I've never had or used one of these before so I wasn't entirely sure what to expect but I followed the setup instructions as closely as I could - note that the order of steps is not left to right but down and across, otherwise you may end up doing step 3 before step 2.

As a side note, I didn't have to do all the setup steps as some assembly had apparently already been done. I assume this was at the factory as there was no evidence it had been sent out to someone in the past.

Also in the manual, it says to use the included setting jig to check the blade height, but doesn't have any instructions on how to actually use the jig, just a grainy picture showing it sat against a blade. As a first-timer - and YouTube being full of blade sharpening jigs or the use of the 2-piece jigs - and despite contacting customer services who sent a cleaner colour version of the pic - I'm still none the wiser as to how it's actually used. Thankfully some test pieces confirmed that the blades appear to be set correctly but I may be stuck if and when the blades need swapping.

Those are my only gripes on the manual - other than that it is well-written and otherwise easy to follow.

It took some time to set up the flimsy fence to get it at 90 degrees along its entire length due to a little twist in it, but it is flimsy enough to "persuade" it into position. Unfortunately it's flimsy enough to put it back or of true during use. I may replace this with a more substantial item in the near future but that will of course reduce the max width I can plane. The guard is also a little flimsy but as long as it's in place it appears it will do the job.

The beds appear to be flat in relation to each other and are solid enough, though with some casting flash needing a bit of tidy up to not scratch or cut your skin when moving - so be careful. They are also machined in a circular pattern rather than being smooth so wax is a necessity.

It's much quieter than my thicknesser but hearing protection is still recommended - dust collection is mandatory both in the manual and from experience.

In all, I'm glad I got the Rutlands one rather than waiting for Aldi to bring theirs back, which would have been the same price as I paid for the Rutlands example. Aside from colour they look largely identical so I wouldn't be surprised if there's a common design used by all the Chinese factories.

If you already know how to set up a planer and you're looking for a relatively cheap occasional use model, you'd probably give this 5 stars. I'd like to give 4.5 but fractions aren't allowed and I can't justify that full star because of the lack of info on how to set the blades and the possible need of modification to the fence.

Verdict: does the job at the moment, and pretty much worth its money.

The planer turned up as promised the next day the planer was very light and not to noisy should get used to working with it quite quickly

GRAHAM TURNER

I love it. Not too heavy for an 80-year-old to move around the shop. Relatively quiet and more than adequate for the job.!

Igor Rosenthal

Very fast delivery!
It's the perfect size and helpful to have for many jobs around the workshop!

Richard Mitchell

I ordered this at about 5pm on a Monday and it was delivered before 5pm on the next day, all I can say is wow. I purchased an ex-demo model for £80 so didn't expect the best, I wasn't even expecting the proper box, but it came packed in all the original packaging and looked like it was brand new. The only thing missing is the spanner to set the side fence, which isn't really a problem as I've got lots of spanners. I set it up in about 10 minutes and the quality of cut is perfect straight from the box. I tried it on a piece of softwood and it gave a beautiful smooth cut. You definitely need dust extraction because it kicks a lot of wood chips out of the extraction port, as i found out when I covered my work bench. I was quite impressed that all the chips did actually come from the extraction port, which I have found doesn't always happen. Overall I am massively impressed with this planer for the price. I had been waiting to get one of these surface planers for a while and it was worth the wait. I would have been happy paying the full price but the bonus of getting it for £80 is great. Can't wait to use it more often, but I need to get some push blocks to protect my fingers. Safety first. Thanks Rutlands for the great customer service.

Jon Wilkinson

Can't fault this planer for the price point, does an excellent job on both hard and soft woods. Have to check the side fence for 90 degrees every know and then but I think you would do that on most planers. Dust collection is good and that that isn't collected doesn't clog as it falls out the bottom through a grate

Nigel Wild

Delivered to SW France in under 2 days, together with 2 other power tools - that's service. Good instructions, easy to assemble and set up, produces an excellent finish. First-class value for money.

Colin Ashburn

I brought this planer as I needed a replacement quick, was a bit dubious about it (looking at the photo, looked a bit flimsy), but it turned out to be a very sturdy and well built planer. Easily set up, very easy to use. No problems or complaints. Didn't even have to set the blades (which I've had to do on more expensive machines).
Would I rate this, yes 10 / 10.
Great machine for someone who only needs one for occasional use.
