Product Details

Block Planes
Made exclusively for Rutlands by Luban, a world leader in hand plane manufacturing, these planes are a serious alternative to the premium brands that are produced in North America. The renowned design has a screw mechanism that easily allows the blade to be varied in depth relative to the sole to change the depth of cut.

Low Angle Block Plane
A block plane is small enough to be used in one hand and is designed for cutting end grain and making trimming or fine adjustment cuts. The low angle ensures that this block plane is especially good when used on end grain. The plane has a modified body casting to make it more responsive in use and a finer pitch blade adjustment thread for improved blade setting accuracy. An adjustable nosepiece allows the mouth to be opened or closed to accommodate coarse or ultra-fine shavings, this nosepiece is secured in place with a knurled brass knob. A 35mm wide, 25 bevelled blade is seated at 12 within the plane, giving an effective angle of 37 for end grain work. The plane has an overall length of 165mm and weighs 850g.

Materials & Manufacturing
The plane body features heavy, stress relieved ductile iron castings which are precision machined to ensure the soles are flat and square to the sides. The plane is fitted with a T10 high carbon steel tool blade which can take a keen edge, and that has been hardened to RC60-64 for maximum edge retention. The blade is held in position by a large bronze cap iron with an integrated palm rest which allows the plane to nestle snugly in the hand. The planes have a lifetime warranty and in the event that they should fail due to a material or manufacturing defect will be replaced free of charge.

A great block plane.
It is a good size and weight.

This a very nice plane so good I've had three one for a friend two for my self would be absolutely lost without them cuts end grain effortlessly

Beautifully crafted and made plane, among the best I have used. Early days but looks like it will be doing a fine job for some time to come.

My first new plane I have ever bought. After fixing numerous second hand planes, I was surprised there was nothing really to do with this plane. Sole was flat, blade was sharp. Okay yes I did sharpen it, got to get to know your metal, but it was a good blade.
Every join is super tight and well made.
For the price, so worth it. My go to plane.

William Giles

This is a nicely made and set up plane. It feels comfy in the hand and is easy to use and adjust. It will be interesting to see how it keeps its edge.

Adrian Carpenter

Excellent plane, sole very flat. Blade exceptionally flat too. I feared the lack of lateral adjustment but the machining of the throat is so accurate that no lateral adjustment, aside from the fraction of mm available on seating the blade, is required to get full width equal thickness shavings.

John Jacques

A lovely block plane. A bargain, Very pleased with mine, very good quality, excellent all round. Great blade, lovely finish to the whole thing, square and flat and smooth. Very nice to use. Would recommend.

5/5 an excellent choice for the enthusiast and joiner

I have just bought one of these fantastic little block planes. Quite contrary to my usual choice, I don't as a rule by chinese stuff, however, this plane has already proven itself to be worthy of sitting amongst my stanleys a records.Infact I would go so far as to say it is better. Not only does it look good it works perfectly too. There was no need to mess about flattening the sole etc, just a quick hone to add the secondary bevel and it works very efficiently. T he machining is to a very high quality and it shows sraight from the box.

V Coggin

I have to agree with all the others here in praise of this little gem. The finish of it is superb but I was most impressed by its weight at over 800 grams. Its narrower than my old record but much more comfortable in the hand. This gives it a great feel and an inertia that makes it a pleasure to use. The Chinese can make good tools!

Alex Boulter

For the price you will not find a better block plane, but don't expect the fit and finish to be the same as the high end brands. The sole was very close to perfectly flat (didn't take long to get it perfect), the sides are square to the sole, blade steel is very high quality and sharpens well. A couple of areas that will want some attention for anyone who buys one - remove the grinding marks from the underside of the lever cap and the depth adjustment will be smoother. Only real niggle is that there's a bit of backlash on the depth adjuster, whereas the older block planes had none (slightly different mechanism).
