Bench Planes
Made exclusively for Rutlands® by Luban, a world leader in hand plane manufacturing, these planes are a serious alternative to the premium brands that are produced in North America. The planes use the reliable bedrock design that gives maximum stability and support for the cutting iron during use as the frog extends all the way to the sole to provide support at its cutting edge. The renowned design has a screw mechanism that allows the frog to be adjusted without removing the blade or lever cap, easily allowing the blade to be adjusted relative to the sole to adjust the mouth opening. It can be made narrow for fine shavings or opened for coarse material.

No 6 Fore Plane
A fore plane excels at flattening large surfaces such as panels, tabletops and workbench tops prior to smoothing. Having a larger footprint than a smaller plane, this fore plane will not follow the contours of the worksurface and therefore level off any peaks or troughs in the wood. The plane features a lateral adjustment lever that is used to ensure the blade sits square to the mouth opening. The blade can also be adjusted vertically using a knurled brass knob to change the depth of cut. The plane has an overall length of 450mm, is 72mm wide and weighs 4kg.

Materials & Manufacturing
The plane body features a heavy, stress relieved ductile iron casting which is precision machined to ensure the sole is flat and square to the sides. The plane is fitted with a T10 high carbon steel tool blade which can take a keen edge, and that has been hardened to RC60-64 for maximum edge retention. A thick stainless steel cap iron and a chipbreaker supports the blade against the full length frog for less chatter and tearout. The front knob and handle are made from solid bubinga wood which provides a firm and comfortable grip. The planes have a lifetime warranty and in the event that they should fail due to a material or manufacturing defect will be replaced free of charge. ©

I chose this as I wanted something that might be better than a Stanley (£50 less) but not as expensive as a Lie Nielsen (£100 more). If it had bought the Stanley, I would have upgraded the iron.In use I can't think that this could be bettered. It is noticeably heavier than the Stanley. There is a lot less backlash on the depth adjuster. It is altogether more solid and beautifully finished. The handle and knob are very comfortable In my large hands. They are a lovely wood and beautifully finished. If I didn't already have two smoothing planes, I would by the No 4. In all a superb plane at a low price.

When I opened the box I had a pleasant surprise. The plane looks MUCH better than in the pictures of this site! Handles are made of bubinga with a very nice satin finish, not too 'heavy'. The blade and chipbreaker are amazingly thick, the overall finish is good, maybe not Veritas-like, but sure nicer than in the pictures. The sole needed a little flattening to be perfect while the blade was flat, a bit rough, but it is within the process of sharpening in any case. I honed it at 30ø plus a microbevel (optimal for A2 blades like this is), it produces an incredibly smooth surface. The frog sits well on the body and the blade on the frog... excellent machining and the Bedrock is a joy over the normal construction since it allows setting the blade when still mounted and gives a better support for the blade. An excellent piece of tool at a bargaign price, highly recommended.
