Product Details

Bench Planes
Made exclusively for Rutlands by Luban, a world leader in hand plane manufacturing, these planes are a serious alternative to the premium brands that are produced in North America. The planes use the reliable bedrock design that gives maximum stability and support for the cutting iron during use as the frog extends all the way to the sole to provide support at its cutting edge. The renowned design has a screw mechanism that allows the frog to be adjusted without removing the blade or lever cap, easily allowing the blade to be adjusted relative to the sole to adjust the mouth opening. It can be made narrow for fine shavings or opened for coarse material.

No 5 Jack Plane
A jack plane has been designed to be used across the grain and will perform trimming, flattening and stock removal tasks accurately and effortlessly. Its large size also makes it good for smoothing and jointing. The plane features a lateral adjustment lever that is used to ensure the blade sits square to the mouth opening. The blade can also be adjusted vertically using a knurled brass knob to change the depth of cut. The plane has an overall length of 355mm, is 62mm wide and weighs 2.6kg.

Materials & Manufacturing
The plane body features a heavy, stress relieved ductile iron casting which is precision machined to ensure the sole is flat and square to the sides. The plane is fitted with a T10 high carbon steel tool blade which can take a keen edge, and that has been hardened to RC60-64 for maximum edge retention. A thick stainless steel cap iron and a chipbreaker supports the blade against the full length frog for less chatter and tearout. The front knob and handle are made from solid bubinga wood which provides a firm and comfortable grip. The planes have a lifetime warranty and in the event that they should fail due to a material or manufacturing defect will be replaced free of charge.

I have ordered this plane following the reviews and was very pleased with it straight out of the box. I ordered an ANANT plane on that website for £50 which is crap so needed something working properly. I decided to spend money and I am very happy I did. As a beginner, it is not easy to know what is a good buy or easy to transform a bad plane into a good one (Anant). This Chinese plane is good for a honest price.

When I opened the box I had a pleasant surprise. The plane looks MUCH better than in the pictures of this site! Handles are made of bubinga with a very nice satin finish, not too 'heavy'. The blade and chipbreaker are amazingly thick, the overall finish is good, maybe not Veritas-like, but sure nicer than in the pictures. The sole needed a little flattening to be perfect while the blade was flat, a bit rough, but it is within the process of sharpening in any case. I honed it at 30ø plus a microbevel (optimal for A2 blades like this is), it produces an incredibly smooth surface. The frog sits well on the body and the blade on the frog... excellent machining and the Bedrock is a joy over the normal construction since it allows setting the blade when still mounted and gives a better support for the blade. An excellent piece of tool at a bargaign price, highly recommended.

The quality of this plane is outstanding for the price. I bought it for my apprentice thinking it would be a good plane for him to practice tuning up and using. The only thing that needed doing out of the box was a quick hone of the blade. The sole was flat and the wings were square. I was so impressed, I've since bought myself one and one of the block planes too.
