Product Details
Block, Smoothing & Jack Planes
Made exclusively for Rutlands® by Luban, a world leader in hand plane manufacturing, these planes are a serious alternative to the premium brands that are produced in North America. The renowned block plane design has a screw mechanism that easily allows the blade to be varied in depth relative to the sole to change the depth of cut. The smoothing & jack planes use the reliable bedrock design that gives maximum stability and support for the cutting iron during use as the frog extends all the way to the sole to provide support at its cutting edge.
Standard Angle Block Plane
A block plane is small enough to be used in one hand and is designed for cutting end grain and making trimming or fine adjustment cuts. This block plane has a modified body casting to make it more responsive in use and a finer pitch blade adjustment thread for improved blade setting accuracy. An adjustable nosepiece allows the mouth to be opened or closed to accommodate coarse or ultra-fine shavings, this nosepiece is secured in place with a knurled brass knob. A 35mm wide, 25° bevelled blade is seated at 20° within the plane, giving an effective angle of 45° for general purpose work. The plane has an overall length of 165mm and weighs 850g. The blade is held in position by a large bronze cap iron with an integrated palm rest which allows the plane to nestle snugly in the hand.
No 3 Smoothing Plane
A smoothing plane is designed for general smoothing, finishing and trimming work. With a shorter sole, it can effortlessly create a smooth surface by following any slight contours in the workpiece and reaching parts a larger plane may have missed. A number 3 plane has more precision and is used on smaller, finer projects. The plane features a lateral adjustment level that is used to ensure the blade sits square to the mouth opening. The blade can also be adjusted vertically using a knurled brass knob to change the depth of cut. The plane has an overall length of 235mm, is 56mm wide and weighs 1.97kg. A thick stainless steel cap iron and a chipbreaker supports the blade against the full length frog for less chatter and tearout. The front knob and handle are made from solid bubinga wood which provides a firm and comfortable grip.
No 62 Low Angle Jack Plane
A jack plane has been designed to be used across the grain and will perform trimming, flattening and stock removal tasks accurately and effortlessly. The low angle design of this plane is perfect for working on end grain and initial smoothing. The plane features a lateral adjustment lever that is used to ensure the blade sits square to the mouth opening. The blade can also be adjusted vertically using a knurled brass knob to change the depth of cut. The plane has an overall length of 355mm, is 62mm wide and weighs 2.6kg. A thick stainless steel cap iron and a chipbreaker supports the blade against the full length frog for less chatter and tearout. The front knob and handle are made from solid bubinga wood which provides a firm and comfortable grip.
Materials & Manufacturing
The plane bodies feature a heavy, stress relieved ductile iron casting which is precision machined to ensure the sole is flat and square to the sides. Each plane is fitted with a T10 high carbon steel tool blade which can take a keen edge, and that has been hardened to RC60-64 for maximum edge retention. The planes have a lifetime warranty and in the event that they should fail due to a material or manufacturing defect will be replaced free of charge. ©
