Bench Planes
Made exclusively for Rutlands® by Luban, a world leader in hand plane manufacturing, these planes are a serious alternative to the premium brands that are produced in North America. The planes use the reliable bedrock design that gives maximum stability and support for the cutting iron during use as the frog extends all the way to the sole to provide support at its cutting edge. The renowned design has a screw mechanism that allows the frog to be adjusted without removing the blade or lever cap, easily allowing the blade to be adjusted relative to the sole to adjust the mouth opening. It can be made narrow for fine shavings or opened for coarse material.
No 4 Smoothing Plane
A smoothing plane is designed for general smoothing, finishing and trimming work. With a shorter sole, it can effortlessly create a smooth surface by following any slight contours in the workpiece and reaching parts a larger plane may have missed. The plane features a lateral adjustment lever that is used to ensure the blade sits square to the mouth opening. The blade can also be adjusted vertically using a knurled brass knob to change the depth of cut. The plane has an overall length of 250mm, is 62mm wide and weighs 2.17kg.
Materials & Manufacturing
The plane body features a heavy, stress relieved ductile iron casting which is precision machined to ensure the sole is flat and square to the sides. The plane is fitted with a T10 high carbon steel tool blade which can take a keen edge, and that has been hardened to RC60-64 for maximum edge retention. A thick stainless steel cap iron and a chipbreaker supports the blade against the full length frog for less chatter and tearout. The front knob and handle are made from solid bubinga wood which provides a firm and comfortable grip. The planes have a lifetime warranty and in the event that they should fail due to a material or manufacturing defect will be replaced free of charge. ©

Very good quality Plane, almost ready to go from out of the box. Blade needed a slight touch up. The faces are flat and square to 0.02mm. Fast delivery to Australia only took 5 days.

Received this plane and the quality of the engineering is quite good. Plane was flat, thick blade with limited chatter, a nice piece of kit. Except the front and back handles are a different timber and a different finish. Rutlands say all these planes they supply are now the same and can't sent a replacement handle to match which is quite disappointing.

This Bedrock no4 plane arrived 5 days ago. Came in a box, was vacuum wrapped with plenty of oil. Unwrapping it I found a very nicely finish plane with a pristine, shiny, unmarked sole which was flat when tested. The blade had to be sharpened which did not take long. A micro bevel was honed quickly. Adjustment of the depths is easy and quick. Within no time I was able to remove translucent shaving which were so thin that the electrostatic pull made the stick to my hands and clothes. An impressive result.A great buy which I warmly recommend.

This is a beautiful smoothing plane. The castings are perfect and the bubinga handles set the plane off perfectly. There is not chatter and this plane produces fine translucent shavings.
