Product Details

For the workshop where space is at a premium, the combination of a planer and thicknesser is favoured, as they take up far less valuable space. The principle of a planer thicknesser is that the surface planer flattens and squares a board and the thicknesser gets the board to an even thickness.

The surface tables on this machine are precision machined from cast aluminium and are heavily ribbed underneath to maintain flatness. The twin blade cutter block is powered by a 1250W high torque motor, rotating at 8500rpm ensuring an extremely smooth, ripple free finish on both hard and softwoods. The rigid alloy fence supports the work and can be titled through 45°, whilst the full width Suva guard gives maximum protection. As an additional safety feature a micro switch prevents the planer from operation if the Suva guard is not correctly fitted. When surface planing you can control the depth of cut from 0 to 2mm in one pass.

In thicknessing mode the in feed and out feed rollers take hold of the wood and move the wood through the cutter block at a consistent feed rate. The thicknessing bed features a stainless steel plate and will accept workpieces up to 200mm wide by 120mm deep, allowing for up to 2mm to be planed in one pass. When connected to a vacuum, fine dust is drawn from the cutter block via the dust shute, which is positioned on the surface table. The dust shute doubles as a blade guard and features a micro switch to prevent operation if not fitted. Weighing 25kg this is a solid, well engineered planer thicknesser that leaves an excellent finish and is supplied with a pair of HSS planer blades. 3 year warranty: if the planer thicknesser fails due to a material or manufacturing defect it or the component will be replaced free of charge. ©

I have only had this planer thicknesser for a week, and I have not used the thicknesser part yet, but the planer is easy to use, and I've had good smooth results on some ash.
As usual these days, the instructions have a more extensive section on safety than how to assemble and use, but I worked it out.
The build quality is solid, and it is reasonably quiet to use.
I need to sort out the extraction as my shop vac struggled with the chip size, but it will hopefully work better with my Rutland Dust Extractor.

I had owned a large thickness planer but it took up too much space in the workshop. This Rutlands unit is so much neater and still does a good job. It runs smoothly and relatively quietly. I agree with one other reviewer that the extractor hood is a "bit of a faff" but it does the job well enough and keeps things compact. Well done Rutlands - again!!

A well built bit of kit. For the workshop tight on room the combination of planner and thicknesser is great.
I have used this on pine, oak and some beech and if I only take 1mm at each pass the finish is great. I good extraction system is a must As with all this type of machinery. Swapping the extractor shoe is bit off a faff but will get easier with practice.
Well done Rutland a well built tool at a good price.
Look forward to using it more during the next few months.

Good price, very quick delivery. Only used once or twice but very pleased. Easy to set up, worked straight away.

This was my first purchase from Rutlands. Great products and service too. This planer thicknesser is well built, easy to use and produces a silky smooth finish on a piece of cherry wood. Highly recommended.

It was delivered on time about a week ago. Installation was trivial. Initial results are very promising. It cuts cleanly and accurately. Chip extraction works very well, although it is somewhat tedious when changing over from planing to thicknessing. However at the price this is more than acceptable. I would strongly recommend this product.

Overall a decent machine for the price. Planing does a good job when you limit it to 0.5mm, anything more causes a fair amount of tear out. Thicknessing is ok but the pressure rollers have a tendency to grab the timber quite aggressively, causing the cutters to slightly gouge the start and end of the piece of timber, which have to be sanded or re-planed to remove the gouge, so not perfect.

This is perfect for me. I have a small workshop and store this under my work bench. I've set up a pulley system to lift it into my bench and then put it away when I'm finished with it. The only problem I had was in the set up, it's not mentioned in the instruction manual but the machine will not run until the waste shute is in place, there's a micro switch that needs to be engaged. I had to email in to get the answer. Once that was done, off she went. It's easy to use and quite accurate for its size and price, not too noisy either. For the price I don't think you'll get a better deal if your after something that you won't be using every day and your only do small-ish jobs.

When I first started looking for a planer thicknesser Rutlands were out of stock BUT to be fair so were every other outlet in the country offering a similar product.
I received an e-mail to say they were due to be delivered and was practically waiting on Rutlands doorstep for them to be unloaded.
All I can say is that the wait was well worth while.
Since setting it up in my workshop it has had large and small, long and short plus hard and soft timbers put over and through it without a single problem.
The fence on mine was set accurately to 90 degrees but the thicknesser reads 1mm out, I have not bothered to reset this as I prefer to only take of 0.5 mm at a time and measure each time the wood goes through.
Time spent ripping timber to near size then sanding smooth has been reduced to a fraction there is however a minor downside in that the shavings produced do not compact down in the dust extractor anything like as much as sawdust meaning I have to empty the cyclone far more frequently.
This bit of kit is a must for any small workshop and especially when you include the savings from buying sawn timber against PSE it is really good value for the money.

It took me less than 10 minutes to fully assemble my planer. All you have to do is attach the main fence using two allen bolts and insert the dust shoot underneath the planer table. Read the instructions though, as I could not get my machine to switch on. There are two safety catches on the dust shot that must be in their location slots. Clever idea as it prevents you from using the planer without covering up the blade from the underneath. Performance wise it has proved excellent. As with all planes less is more so I tend to remove 0.5mm at a time, this puts less stress n the blade edges and in my opinion results in a superior finish. I clocked the tables and across the full length on the diagonal and there was less than 0.5mm differential which is excellent for a machine of this size. In use the machine is very solid and does not need bolting down. Maybe on very large or heavy timbers you might wish to do so. The main table fence locking mechanism has two support arms to prevent wobble. The fence scale can be calibrated. Mine sat initially at 2 degrees rather than zero but a quick adjustment soon rectified that. The finish I have achieved so far on quite open grain pine has been excellent, so I would expect an even finer finish on close grain hard woods. Not the quietest of machines but then again planers never are. Out of 10 I would give it a 9.

Having used a large Sedgwick planer many years ago I was a lisle sceptical about a machine of this size. So far it has performed very well. I bought a number of lengths of rough cut 4 x 2's in 6 foot lengths and trued them on the surface table. Then I thicknessed all four faces removing roughly 2mm per face. The first time I used it I did not connect my extractor and the finish was not uktra smooth. When I did connect the extractor the finish was excellent. Dust gets trapped in the recess between the planer knives and the cutter block when not using an extractor. Overall very pleased with this planer and I would definitely invest again.
