Product Details

This set features the three most popular rattan handle Japanese saws, Dozuki (R1002), Kataba (R1005) and Ryoba (R1008) complete with a traditional Japanese saw roll for storage and protection.

Japanese Saws
Made exclusively for Rutlands® by Gyokucho, the world's leading Japanese saw manufacturer, these saws have one stand out difference from their western counterparts; they cut on the pull stroke rather than the push stroke. The action of pulling the saw keeps the blade in tension through the cut, which allows the blade to be thinner and lighter, for a much smoother and faster cut. The narrow kerf means that the saw removes less material and requires far less energy to achieve a super-fine, tear free and clean cut. Each tooth is impulse hardened for superior sharpness and to stay sharper for longer. The teeth are symmetrically set to ensure straight, drift free sawing and the blades are electronically surface plated to minimise friction and prevent resin build up and corrosion.

Dozuki
This Dozuki saw has a 180mm long blade that allows for maximum control and features ultra-thin, universal teeth for sawing across, along and diagonally to the grain. Due to the finest of kerfs, Dozuki saws are indispensable for cutting dovetails and other fine joints and for making precise shoulder and crosscuts. The universal tooth pattern allows for the rip-cut of pins and the crosscut of side pins when making dovetails in both hard and soft wood. A reinforced back stabilises the 0.3mm ultra-thin to ensure backlash free saw blade guidance for straight, chatter free performance.

Kataba
Kataba saws have slightly thicker blades, that are very robust and not require a reinforcing back, allowing for deep cuts flush to the surface and for long cuts on large workpieces. This Kataba has a 240mm blade with impulse hardened, trapezoidal teeth for cutting across and diagonal to the grain. Each tooth is sharpened on three edges in an alternating pattern to cleanly slice, rather than tear the wood fibres leaving an extremely clean, smooth finish. The tooth geometry is excellent at clearing the kerf to prevent clogging. With its wear resistant, super hard teeth this Kataba saw will perform trimming, shoulder and flush cuts in hardwoods, exotic and tropical hardwoods, soft woods, particle boards and glued woods.

Ryoba
The Ryoba is the most versatile Japanese saw for cabinetmaking and joinery as the blade has two different tooth patterns to allow for both crosscut and rip work. This Ryoba has a 180mm blade with impulse hardened, trapezoidal teeth for cutting across and diagonal to the grain on one side and triangular teeth for ripping along the grain on the opposite side. The trapezoidal teeth are sharpened on three edges in an alternating pattern to cleanly slice, rather than tear the wood fibres leaving an extremely clean, smooth finish. The triangular rip teeth become progressively finer from tip to tang to make starting the cut easier and to use less force as the stroke progresses. Ryoba saws have slightly thicker blades, that are very robust and not require a reinforcing back, allowing for deep cuts flush to the surface and for long cuts on large workpieces in hardwood, softwood and particle board.

Rattan Handle
Traditional in style, the blade is mounted on a lightweight wooden handle for fatigue free working and is wrapped in rattan for excellent comfort, breathability and hold. Made in Miki City, Japan, these premium Japanese saws have lifetime warranty and in the event that they should fail due to a material or manufacturing defect will be replaced free of charge. ©

These saws are as beautiful to use as they are to look at. Precice, flexible and yielding flawless results with a little practice.

Dan Tansey

Excellent saws. Don't see any reason to go back to Western style saws. These give much better control and accuracy

Derek Mcneill

Having never used Japanese Saws before, I found these amazingly easy to use, providing clean straight cuts with what felt like little to no effort in comparison to normal western saws.

Richard Cook

One of if not the best saws i have used strong and the control the handles give you are amazing perfect tool for beginner to the
Professional

Andy Baker

Great set. I've used Japanese saws for a while now and thought I'd upgrade.
These are especially good for accurate close work, and give a very fine cut. Excellent purchase, I'm really pleased with this set
They fit well alongside traditional saws which I still use for routine work, and importantly can easily be sharpened.

Brian Jackson

Excellent quality as usual and a great price.

Tim Blackman

Perfect tools for Precision cuts leaving smooth surfaces that require little or no finishing.
A bonus surprises was how little physical effort is required to pull the saws through both hard and soft woods.
I have previously been put off by the price of Japanese saws but now wish I had invested in them many years ago.

Jayne Mashiter

Lovely saws, a pleasure to use, gives a nice fine cut.

Paul Hardy

Having used western style hand saws for over 20 years I was slightly sceptical about the benefits of Japanese saws. All I can say is I wish I had been told about them 20 years ago. They are in a different league to any saw I have used. The blades are really thin which means you are removing less wood and therefore have to exert less force. The action of cutting on the pull stroke keeps the blade perfectly straight and the teeth are individually set to act like a series of planes, shaving the wood away. Brilliant and I will never go back to a conventional saw.

Tim Harrison

Very pleased with the saws, arrived very quickly and more importantly are a joy to use. Very sharp and make light work of Oak & Yew timber. Should have bought them years ago.

Steven Warner

Bought these saws a couple of weeks ago and i have to say wow what a difference they make. Straight cuts, quickly, in all the woods I've used recently. Should of bought them a long time ago. Don't stall take the plunge and buy them.

Tony Doyle
