Product Details

This Japanese waterstone and honing guide sled package have been designed to work together to give consistent and accurate results when sharpening wood chisels and plane irons. The waterstone also comes complete with a plastic base if you want to use it in a traditional way, without the sled.

R7515 - Premium Honing Guide Sled
The premium honing guide sled has been precision CNC machined from aircraft grade aluminium the sliding carriage glides back and forth on a stainless steel bar, that travels through a housing which features 50 micro ball-bearings. These micro bearings ensure a smooth, effortless movement with no lateral play, allowing for consistent longitudinal movement over the length of the sharpening stone.

The head uses a clamping bar that registers on the face of the blade and accepts flat and tapered blades up to 9mm thick and 52mm wide. A series of parallel lines are etched onto the head to ensure the chisel or plane iron sits square to the jig. You can lock-off the head at your desired honing angle anywhere from 10-60° using an Allen key or as favoured by most, you can leave the head unlocked and simply copy the existing angle of the blade edge. The base of the jig accepts water stones from 160mm to 200mm in length and up to 80mm in width, held in position using the aluminium clamping block. Beautifully made from CNC machined aluminium combined with solid brass knurl screws this jig sits on four brass feet with rubber sole pads that prevent the sled from walking when sharpening.

This sled, unlike a traditional hand held honing guide eliminates any lateral or longitudinal play, allowing the blade to smoothly, consistently and accurately move over the sharpening stone.

R7508 - Premium 200mm Japanese Combination Water Stone - 1000/6000
These are the largest water stones that we offer measuring 200mm in length by 80mm in width and 30mm in depth. The large surface area aids the sharpening performance, allows for the sharpening of wide plane blades and offers extra support for honing guides when sharpening chisels and knives. These premium Japanese combination water stones are man-made from Corundum, a synthetic aluminium oxide abrasive, set in a resin bond. Combination stones consist of two stones of different grits which are machine-fused together to create a permanent joint, allowing you to rotate the stones to select the most appropriate grit. The finish that you achieve with a water stone is an amalgamation of the particle size, durability of the abrasive and the resin bond strength. These water stones have a medium strength bond and wear relatively slowly, releasing fresh, sharp abrasive at a reduced rate in comparison to stones with weaker bonds that release abrasive at higher rates and wear down more quickly.

The water stone formulation is excellent for sharpening O1 general tool steel, a steel commonly used to make knives, and are fast cutting when sharpening tough alloys such as A2 and M2 high speed steels which are used to manufacture chisels, plane irons, turning and carving tools. You simply immerse the stones in water and allow to soak for 3 to 5 minutes, at which point they are ready for use. It is important to ensure the water stone retains moisture during the sharpening process.

The fresh abrasive particles break down and dull during the sharpening process, creating progressively finer grits, allowing you to move seamlessly from a coarse grit stone, to a medium grit stone to a fine grit stone. After use leave the water stone to dry out naturally, before using a diamond flattening stone to re-level the face of the water stone. These combination stones sit in a polymer base which has four no-mar rubber feet to prevent the stone from wandering during the sharpening process whilst protecting the work surface from scratching. These combination stones come with a 60mm x 20mm wide mini-flattening stone for reshaping the surface of the stone.

This combination water stone is 1000 grit and 6000 grit. The 1000 grit stone is the fastest cutting stone and is used to remove nicks before sharpening and to shape and establish a basic edge and the 6000 grit water stone is used to remove burr, polish and hone. The large, long-life water stone and the honing guide sled have a lifetime warranty and in the event of a failure due to a material or manufacturing defect the stone will be replaced free of charge. ©

Tom Hamilton

What a product. Easy to use and the results Ive got are incredible

Mark

A quality product, well made and perfect for holding my sharpening stones. Well pleased with this tool.

Paul Halewood

Bought this honing/sharpening sled as manual holding chisel or plane blades at correct angle is hard for me, this makes it a breeze, easy to setup and smooth in operation, build quality of item is very good too, nice and weighty and very rigid in use, if like me you struggle to keep blades at correct angle free hand, then this is the ideal sled.

Keith Hudson

I not a born tool sharpener, I can do it but the resulting edge was never true until I tried the Premium Honing Sled. It can be a bit of hard work restoring the damage my amateurish sharpening attempts have done but it is well worth the time and effort. I know that keeping my chisels sharp will now be a breeze and I will be able to quickly restore their better than new edge. The only slight negative would be that you need a suitably deep stone to get a 30% angle or make a suitable packing block to use it with thinner stones or thin diamond coated stones.

Antony Toseland

Used this today for the first time on an old beat up chisel and old oil stone to get the hang of it. All I can say is brilliant an old chisel now as sharp as my expensive set. So easy to use and set up. No more sending my chisels and planer blades away for honing will pay for itself pretty quick. Now to invest in Rutland sharpening stones and keep my chisels & planes super sharp. Will recommend this to anyone wanting to sharpen their tools correctly.

Stuart Robson

Saves a lot of time in setting up compared to other jigs. Also works well with a variety of "stones" e.g diamond as well as waterstones. I did find that (a set of) angle gauges greatly assisted getting the right honing angle.

Anthony Denniss

Super smooth moment, well thought out engineering. Makes sharpening uniformed consistently

James Bullock

What a wonderfully engineered well thought out piece of kit ! This will not only speed up your sharpening process but take a lot of the guess work out of it too. The engineering looks and feels robust and sturdy and finished well...after inspection not one sharp edge or dodgy thread anywhere and very swift delivery. Thank you Rutland's...another quality product at much less than some other similar premium products.

Wesley Mckay

Makes sharpening my chisels and plane irons a lot easier.

Steve Hill

I feel a bit of a cheat as I want to buy this, but have not. I thought other readers might want to know why. I use Shapton sharpening stones. They are 210mm long. This has a capacity of up to 200mm.

I also have a couple of the larger Norton stones: 203mm.

I also use Japanese chisels which are heavily tapered. Sometimes they are 12mm thick at the point you want to clamp them to get a fine angle. This guide stops at 9mm.

Great idea: I look forward to version 2!

Ollie Wright

Wow what a product, if only I knew this existed years ago it would have saved so much time compared to setting up manual honing guides. All you have to do is insert the chisel into the holder ( tip - the length inserted determines the sharpening angle ) and sharpen. Very easy to switch between grits of stone while the blades is clamped which means you can return to the same sharpening angle.

Mehdi Zitouni

Please Rutland can you add a video showing how it works on YouTube or here it will be so helpful because this looks like a new jig that would work realy well compared to others that damage the stone

Evan Jenkins

I do a lot of sharpening of chisels and plane blades and I have never found a product that gives consistent results like this. I simply lock the jig off at my desired angle and sharpen then hone the blade as required.

Martyn Freeman

Used for the first time yesterday and after sharpening one of my chisels I had to do the rest. Everything came up beautifully sharp. I just need the time to get to my hand planes.

Sharpened very quickly and the tray for the stone catches most of the dirty water off the stone.

Edward Tucker

Great product. Really happy with this addition to my stones. Awesome service as well.

David Vennings

Well engineered piece of kit.
I note what an earlier reviewer said about needing to block up thin stones but my only reservation is the opposite; I have some thick waterstones and ideally the sled arms could be longer to allow these to be used.
