Product Details

This is an exceptional woodturning lathe package. The lathe is the established market leader in North America and the chuck features the latest advancement in work holding systems. Compared to many other bench top lathes it has greater work holding capacity allowing for 305mm bowl turning and 457mm spindle turning and has the advantage that you can extend the bed at a later stage to increase spindle turning to over 1000mm. Supplied with a precision 75 chuck kit this package is the perfect purchase for a new woodturner or an experienced one looking to take their work to a new level.

The lathe is powered by a high torque, induction motor which is extremely quiet in use, even at maximum speed and under full load. A non-slip poly V belt efficiently transmits power from the motor whilst the motor controller automatically increases the level of torque to maintain the speed, as load on the workpiece is increased. The drive belt is moved to one of the three steps on the pulley and then the variable speed control knob is rotated, to dial in to a precise speed (450 to 1100rpm, 960 to 2400rpm or 1400 to 3500rpm).

The digital read out is ideally positioned on the top of the headstock to offer perfect visibility. The level of vibration is remarkably low, due to the substantial grey iron castings which have the mass needed to dampen and absorb vibration. The cast iron headstock is CNC machined for the precise alignment of the drive spindle and steel roller bearings, ensuring class leading concentricity. The drive spindle has a 1" x 8tpi thread with a no 2 morse taper to allow for the fitting of industry standard chucks and attachments. The tailstock has no 2 morse taper which is hollowed out to 10mm diameter to allow for the drilling of spindles for accepting electric cable when making standard and bed side lamps.

The extra long 200mm tool rest reduces the need for frequent repositioning and is held firmly in the non-slip banjo with a 25.4mm diameter stem. All of the adjustment handles are ergonomic and can be locked off to prevent obstruction with the turning tool. The lathe comes complete with a tool holder, revolving centre, four prong centre, 70mm face plate, spindle locking wrenches and a set of extra long bolts to fit the lathe to the premium lathe stand. This lathe is ideal for bowl and platter turning, goblet, vase and egg cup turning, pen turning and all between centres work.

The new precision 75 woodturning chuck is engineered to ensure that the workpiece sits as close as possible to the headstock, therefore reducing load and minimizing wear on the main spindle bearing. This chuck is extremely strong and durable, as it is machined from a special grade of medium-tensile steel, which is normally used for the manufacture of high performance turbo impellors, pistons and gears. Using this steel allows for closer tolerances during the manufacturing process which results in excellent concentricity to minimize vibration and to ensure that a chatter-free, super fine finish can be achieved by the woodturner. It is the latest advancement in work holding systems for discerning woodturners and comes with a 10 year warranty. Precision engineered and beautifully balanced, it offers superior performance combined with rock-solid holding power and excellent load bearing capability.

The chuck is specifically designed so the jaws cut into the wood to provide a class leading clamping force, unlike other woodturning chucks that use engineering jaw profiles which crush the wood fibres and do not grip the workpiece as securely. The precision machined scroll mechanism and the high ratio gearing combine to ensure for a strong grip irrespective of workpiece size. The four jaws open and close using a T-handled key, allowing for one handed operation, leaving one hand free to support and balance your workpiece when mounting and dis-mounting the workpiece. Measuring 70mm in diameter, this chuck can be used on all sizes of lathe from large capacity professional lathes through to midi and mini lathes.

This package contains the premium woodturning lathe, precision 75 chuck body, 50mm dovetail jaws, 65mm faceplate ring, 35mm pin jaws and screw chuck. This wide array of jaws allows for all popular turning projects including; spindles, bowls, goblets, candlesticks, pepper mills, pens and pencils up to 20kg and more. ©

Excellent piece of kit, it's so quiet don't know that it's running. Superb build quality no vibration, wish I'd bought one ages ago. It's just a joy to change speeds, makes turning and finishing a complete job and a pleasure. Would highly recommend this to anyone, came within a couple days of ordering and it's so well packaged. We'll done Rutlands.

Richard Berry

I was looking for something to replace my ageing Record Drillmaster and this is perfect. Quiet and vibration free with a small footprint to suit my modest workshop. Easy to work with and adequate capacities for most projects.
I have yet to find a job that the chuck cannot get to grips with.

Brian Mills

Well pleased with the lathe and brilliant service

Andrew Summers

I had my eye on this for some time, as I make pens and at the great price I took the plung. This is a excellent lathe and so quiet, with no vibration. I turned my first pen blank with ease. Absolutely love this lathe well worth every penny.

Stuart Mclellan

Been woodturning for 25 years +. Bought this to take with me on demonstrations. Ideal size, powerful and quiet. I also teach and have no problem recommending this lathe to my students. Great buy.

Stuart Mckinven

A good buy, very pleased. Delivery excellent
Very quiet motor, centres match perfecly.
Would recommend to anyone.

I am pretty new to woodturning! I initially bought a cheap lathe to see if I enjoyed it and decided that I would like to upgrade. I carried out a bit of research into which lathe to buy and decided on this one.
I am absolutely delighted with it and the previous reviews were spot on. It is miles apart from my first lathe and I bought it with the precision 75 chuck, this gives me plenty of options for what I can turn.
I love the variable speed control with LCD screen, it makes it so easy to dial in the correct speed for what I am turning, I was struggling with this on my old one.
Finally to the noise in my workshop, there is none! This is so quiet, and well balanced that I won't be getting any complaints about noise or vibration. I like others didn't even have to bolt it to my bench!
Best tool in my workshop by far!!!

Thought I'd upgrade to this Premium Lathe from Rutlands with variable speed from the original lathe that I bought from Rutlands about four years ago. That original lathe served me very well as I eased myself into turning after a gap of 52 years when i last turned wood at school. My new lather has now been put into service. Powerful, unbelievably quiet, smooth and so well put together. Its a dream to use and I'm so glad I took the plunge to upgrade. Delivery was fast, as you'd expect from Rutlands as well. I'm very happy with this new purchase and am looking forward to many happy hours turning on it. Alignment is spot on and its well engineered. 5 stars in my book.

The question is not so much why you should buy this lathe but rather why wouldn't you buy it.
While agreeing with all the previous comments I feel they have missed out on the best thing about the lathe and that is the seamless speed control.
I have used it on a wide variety of sizes and types of wood from as small as 50mm to 250mm in both soft (Cherry) and hard (Oak) woods and have discovered that the ability to control the speed so precisely improves both the speed and quality of the cut, no matter which tool I am using.
There is minimal stalling while roughing out large irregular blocks and this combined with the ability to very gradually increase the speed makes the process as much as 5 times quicker than on any other lathe I have used.
All of this is without the lathe being bolted down. When I took it out of the box I was too impatient to spend the time fixing it to the bench and tried it with a little 100mm blank. It is still not fixed to the bench because no matter the size or roughness of the project it simply does not move.

Anthony Whipp

Great little Lathe, good Quality, sturdy, and very Quiet. love the speed control for initial rounding off work. Downside, the MT on the drive could have been a few mm deeper. One drive was bottoming out so ground a couple of mm off it and it fits fine now.

Lee Healey-guest

Only ever had used lathes before, this is the first new lathe i have owned,it is incredible love the build quality and wow is it quiet. Brilliant lathe rutlands

Kenneth Croft

The product is satisfactory my only gripe is the Tailstock locking handle is on the back it would be better positioned on the front. My wood turning friend who was founder chairman of "Coombe Abbey Woodturners" the first thing he said the locking handle is on the wrong side. I've been turning for 20 years. My previous lathe was a Hegner[UK]. This one is as good if not better than more expensive lathes.

John

I can highly recommend this chuck. It is very well engineered, extremely precise and accurate. Excellent for bowl and goblet turning.

Michael Cantral

A really superb chuck. It does everything claimed for it and more. I've had mine for a couple of weeks now and really put it through its paces - it achieves everything I ask of it. Over the years I've used most types of chuck but this one really is the tops.

Steve Smith

WOW, WOW, WOW. This chuck is brilliant, well balanced and very smooth when running. I purchased this rather than the Record Power Nova G3 and I'm so pleased. I am very new to turning and found it very easy to use. I would highly recommend this to everyone! But get it soon before they run out and at an excellent price too!

John Beebe

Excellent service and delivery. Would recommend to anyone.

Geoff Meanwell

Very pleased with this lathe...
Brilliant quality, and easy to use..
Also, fantastic fast delivery ..Well done again Rutlands

Brian Mckinlay

After an extensive internet research, I chose this complete kit to get started. It did not disappoint. Easy to set-up, well made, feels and look excellent quality. Looking forward to many happy hours at the lathe. Thanks to Rutlands for next day delivery at a reasonable price. Would recommend.

Kevan Richards

Like all the reviews previously written I wanted to upgrade and have been blown away with the difference. I bought the lathe and Chuck option, outstanding value and in the words of a popular takeaway reviewer it is definitely " next level"
I have also took advantage of some of the daily offers sent through too. Great service and company keeping you informed all the way.
Rutland is next level.

William Herbert

I bought the lathe and chuck package to replace a small proxxon woodturning lathe that I used in my hobby of model making. The more I used the proxxon lathe the bigger my projects grew so I need a bigger lathe. I opted for the rutlands lathe because of the reviews by other people who said it was very quiet in use. It is very quiet. I checked the spindle alignment and it is spot on. I have made some model wheels from oak and it handled it with ease. I am vey happy with the quick dispatch and delivery by rutlands.

John Bilson

An absolute gem of a lathe. It runs extremely quietly and there is simply no vibration through the castings. It is in a different league to my old Tyme Cub lathe. Turned a bowl form a Bubinga blank that was way out of true and the lathe did not stall or slow when initially roughing out. It seemed to relish the challenge. Highly impressed.

Paul Walsh

This lathe lives up to its specification. I have used a number of brands of lathe in my tutors workshop ( he has 9 different lathes) and I can honestly say that this is the smoothest running lathe I have come across. You don't even need to mount it down, it seems to have no vibration. Without and adjustments the headstock and tailstock lined up perfectly. It's great - what more can I say. Rutlands should make a video of it to show how smooth it is.

George Lloyd

I was impressed from the moment I started to unbox this lathe. It was extremely well packed in a polystyrene mould, there were no chips or damage to the paint surface and all I had to do was plug and go. I have had two other lathes in the past and neither compare to this. It is remarkably quiet and simply purrs when you turn the speed dial. I balanced a penny coin on the headstock, that's how smooth it is. It is in a different class to any other lathe I have owned. It looks very similar to the Rikon lathe sold in America. I have turned a couple of bowls out of Bubinga and I am delighted with the finish. It really is an excellent lathe.

Mick Beckett

I bought this chuck absolutley fantastic I have only had it for 24hours I have turned 2 bowls a minature table & a goblet I have not turned as much before. It is because I feel the wood is secure in the chuck jaws & this makes me more relaxed so I do more. Mick

James Clarke

So far I have turned a candlestick and a bowl using my new chuck. I found it very simple to set up. I used a 40mm square blank for the candle stick which was gripped in the main jaws. As the candle stick was only 200mm long it did not need support at the tailstock end. For the bowl I used a 200mm Bubinga blank which was 60mm deep. After turning the recess in the rear of the blank the main jaws gripped the blank by expanding into the recess. It was a bit nervous at first when knocking the corners off but once removed the going was very smooth. I would not say they are master pieces but for a first attempt I am proud. there are a number of good videos you can watch about setting up your timber in chucks that take the mystique out of it. Great product that I would definitely buy again.
