Product Details
This is an exceptional woodturning lathe and stand package. Compared to many other bench top lathes it has greater work holding capacity allowing for 305mm bowl turning and 457mm spindle turning and has the advantage that you can extend the bed at a later stage to increase spindle turning to over 1000mm.
The lathe is powered by a high torque, induction motor which is extremely quiet in use, even at maximum speed and under full load. A non-slip poly V belt efficiently transmits power from the motor whilst the motor controller automatically increases the level of torque to maintain the speed, as load on the workpiece is increased. The drive belt is moved to one of the three steps on the pulley and then the variable speed control knob is rotated, to dial in to a precise speed (450 to 1100rpm, 960 to 2400rpm or 1400 to 3500rpm).
The digital read out is ideally positioned on the top of the headstock to offer perfect visibility. The level of vibration is remarkably low, due to the substantial grey iron castings which have the mass needed to dampen and absorb vibration. The cast iron headstock is CNC machined for the precise alignment of the drive spindle and steel roller bearings, ensuring class leading concentricity. The drive spindle has a 1" x 8tpi thread with a no 2 morse taper to allow for the fitting of industry standard chucks and attachments. The tailstock has no 2 morse taper which is hollowed out to 10mm diameter to allow for the drilling of spindles for accepting electric cable when making standard and bed side lamps.
The extra long 200mm tool rest reduces the need for frequent repositioning and is held firmly in the non-slip banjo with a 25.4mm diameter stem. All of the adjustment handles are ergonomic and can be locked off to prevent obstruction with the turning tool. The lathe comes complete with a tool holder, revolving centre, four prong centre, 70mm face plate, spindle locking wrenches and a set of extra long bolts to fit the lathe to the premium lathe stand. This lathe is ideal for bowl and platter turning, goblet, vase and egg cup turning, pen turning and all between centres work.
The lathe stand that should not be confused with the array of low cost lookalikes. The stand is manufactured from hardened, heavy gauge steel pressings which have been stitch welded together to create immense strength. These tubular sections are finished in an epoxy powder coated paint that is resistant to the knocks and bumps associated with a busy workshop. Designed to be free-standing the legs are splayed for maximum stability and to allow for ample foot room and feature height adjustable rubber coated feet for seating on uneven floors. The stand adjusts from 590mm to 946mm in length and from 615mm to 876mm in height. The height of the lathe stand can be adjusted in 25mm increments.

I had my eye on this for some time, as I make pens and at the great price I took the plung. This is a excellent lathe and so quiet, with no vibration. I turned my first pen blank with ease. Absolutely love this lathe well worth every penny.

Been woodturning for 25 years +. Bought this to take with me on demonstrations. Ideal size, powerful and quiet. I also teach and have no problem recommending this lathe to my students. Great buy.

Thought I'd upgrade to this Premium Lathe from Rutlands with variable speed from the original lathe that I bought from Rutlands about four years ago. That original lathe served me very well as I eased myself into turning after a gap of 52 years when i last turned wood at school. My new lather has now been put into service. Powerful, unbelievably quiet, smooth and so well put together. Its a dream to use and I'm so glad I took the plunge to upgrade. Delivery was fast, as you'd expect from Rutlands as well. I'm very happy with this new purchase and am looking forward to many happy hours turning on it. Alignment is spot on and its well engineered. 5 stars in my book.

The question is not so much why you should buy this lathe but rather why wouldn't you buy it.
While agreeing with all the previous comments I feel they have missed out on the best thing about the lathe and that is the seamless speed control.
I have used it on a wide variety of sizes and types of wood from as small as 50mm to 250mm in both soft (Cherry) and hard (Oak) woods and have discovered that the ability to control the speed so precisely improves both the speed and quality of the cut, no matter which tool I am using.
There is minimal stalling while roughing out large irregular blocks and this combined with the ability to very gradually increase the speed makes the process as much as 5 times quicker than on any other lathe I have used.
All of this is without the lathe being bolted down. When I took it out of the box I was too impatient to spend the time fixing it to the bench and tried it with a little 100mm blank. It is still not fixed to the bench because no matter the size or roughness of the project it simply does not move.

An absolute gem of a lathe. It runs extremely quietly and there is simply no vibration through the castings. It is in a different league to my old Tyme Cub lathe. Turned a bowl form a Bubinga blank that was way out of true and the lathe did not stall or slow when initially roughing out. It seemed to relish the challenge. Highly impressed.

I bought the lathe and chuck package to replace a small proxxon woodturning lathe that I used in my hobby of model making. The more I used the proxxon lathe the bigger my projects grew so I need a bigger lathe. I opted for the rutlands lathe because of the reviews by other people who said it was very quiet in use. It is very quiet. I checked the spindle alignment and it is spot on. I have made some model wheels from oak and it handled it with ease. I am vey happy with the quick dispatch and delivery by rutlands.

Like all the reviews previously written I wanted to upgrade and have been blown away with the difference. I bought the lathe and Chuck option, outstanding value and in the words of a popular takeaway reviewer it is definitely " next level"
I have also took advantage of some of the daily offers sent through too. Great service and company keeping you informed all the way.
Rutland is next level.

After an extensive internet research, I chose the complete kit to get started. It did not disappoint. Easy to set-up, well made, feels and look excellent quality. Looking forward to many happy hours at the lathe. Thanks to Rutlands for next day delivery at a reasonable price. Would recommend.

I was impressed from the moment I started to unbox this lathe. It was extremely well packed in a polystyrene mould, there were no chips or damage to the paint surface and all I had to do was plug and go. I have had two other lathes in the past and neither compare to this. It is remarkably quiet and simply purrs when you turn the speed dial. I balanced a penny coin on the headstock, that's how smooth it is. It is in a different class to any other lathe I have owned. It looks very similar to the Rikon lathe sold in America. I have turned a couple of bowls out of Bubinga and I am delighted with the finish. It really is an excellent lathe.

This lathe lives up to its specification. I have used a number of brands of lathe in my tutors workshop ( he has 9 different lathes) and I can honestly say that this is the smoothest running lathe I have come across. You don't even need to mount it down, it seems to have no vibration. Without and adjustments the headstock and tailstock lined up perfectly. It's great - what more can I say. Rutlands should make a video of it to show how smooth it is.

Only ever had used lathes before, this is the first new lathe i have owned,it is incredible love the build quality and wow is it quiet. Brilliant lathe rutlands

The product is satisfactory my only gripe is the Tailstock locking handle is on the back it would be better positioned on the front. My wood turning friend who was founder chairman of "Coombe Abbey Woodturners" the first thing he said the locking handle is on the wrong side. I've been turning for 20 years. My previous lathe was a Hegner[UK]. This one is as good if not better than more expensive lathes.
Anthony Whipp
Great little Lathe, good Quality, sturdy, and very Quiet. love the speed control for initial rounding off work. Downside, the MT on the drive could have been a few mm deeper. One drive was bottoming out so ground a couple of mm off it and it fits fine now.
