FULL DESCRIPTION
Made in Germany, these firmer gouges are used for cutting flutes, grooves and for sculpting. With the bevel being on the outside of the tool, they are commonly recognised as out-cannel gouges and are used either free hand or with a mallet.

The blades are made from a premium quality chrome vanadium tool steel, which has high resistance to metal fatigue, to withstand the demands of repeated blows from a mallet. Each blade is hardened to Rc61 along its entire length, resulting in a blade that will hold and retain a razor sharp edge, over the life of the tool, without becoming brittle when sharpened. The blades are finely polished to achieve a mirror finish to minimise friction and allow for a smooth, clean cut. The blade and tang are forged from one piece of steel, which is seated deeply into the chisel handle for strength and durability.

The handles are made from slow growing hornbeam, selected for its straight grain and strength and two steel hoops prevent the handle splitting or spreading when struck with a mallet. The handles have flats on the top and bottom for better grip and comfort. The gouges range in overall length from 250mm to 280mm subject to the width of the blade. This 6 piece set is beautifully presented in a fitted, solid beech box and comprises of 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 16mm, 20mm and 26mm gouges, with each gouge having its own location to prevent movement. ©

Very good practical gouges.

I've just received these, gave them a quick strop to polish the edge and started using them on oak. They do the job perfectly and hold their edge well. Good quality gouges.

I bought these for my apprentice who insisted on having split proof handled chisels. My experience of such chisels in the past was always of substandard blades only capable of very rough cutting. Not so with these, I am pleased to say. The blades are exactly the same high quality as my wooden handled chisels and take an incredibly sharp edge. The handles do stand up to that extra bit of force when required and when needed I borrow these chisels from my apprentice.

As a fine furniture maker, I prefer to hand cut for accuracy rather than router cut for speed especially when adding flutes, beads and other detailing. I recently replaced my old set of firmer gouges with these ones and I am extremely impressed with both the quality and performance. Working mostly in native hardwoods, I need tools that are capable of doing the job and these gouges are truly outstanding in their edge holding properties and their performance. Next time I need to replace chisels, Rutlands will be my first port of call.
