These hard wearing, high carbon steel forstner bits retain the same cutting geometry over their lifetime. Skewed tooth geometry ensures minimal fibre pull and tearing of the wood, for clean cut, flat-bottomed holes in hard, soft and exotic woods.

  • Back tapered cutting edges reduce friction and prevent binding
  • Bit will not deform, maintaining cutting geometry for life
FULL DESCRIPTION
These forstner bits are made from a special grade of high carbon steel which is extremely hard wearing and retains its hardness over prolonged use, resulting in a bit that will not deform under heat and which will always keep the same cutting geometry, over its lifetime. The rim of the forstner bit is a fraction of a millimetre higher than the chippers which results in the bit entering the wood cleanly, prior to the chippers clearing the wood. The double-chip channels means swarf is quickly cleared, minimising rim heat, allowing for clean cut, flat bottom holes in hard, soft and exotic woods. The teeth have a skewed geometry to ensure minimal fibre pull and tearing of the wood.

The bits are back tapered from the cutting edge to reduce friction and prevent binding and have been fully ground to give precise concentricity to ensure a highly accurate hole. These bits are primarily used in a drill press or the tailstock of a lathe when boring end grain. The overall lengths of the bits are 90mm, with 10mm round shanks and available in 1mm increments from 8mm to 50mm. Our choice in forstner bits for the discerning woodworker and woodturner. ©

Why did I buy this bit?

Recently I decided to buy the Rutlands work bench Holdfasts. The website specified a 19mm dog hole. Not having a 19mm bit of any pattern I looked for a suitable bit on the website and the only one offered was this 19mm Forstner bit. I reluctantly signed up for the extra £10 to get it only to find that the Holdfasts work fine in 18mm holes! Now I have a fairly superfluous 19mm Forstner bit and am £10 out of pocket. I also noted that the bit delivered did not match the website photo: The circular cutting edge of the bit supplied was a continuous knife edge rather than the advertised "skewed tooth" pattern. This didn't noticeably affect performance in MDF but I have yet to use it in natural timber where there may be a difference in performance. Overall a bit disappointing and not up to Rutlands usual standards and attention to detail.

Bought the 32mm forstner bit to do a specific job. Sorted it, no problem. Just as advertised and brilliant, fast delivery.
