The rim of the forstner bit is a fraction of a millimetre higher than the chippers which results in the bit entering the wood cleanly, prior to the chippers clearing the wood. The double-chip channels means swarf is quickly cleared, minimising rim heat, allowing for clean cut, flat bottom holes in hard, soft and exotic woods. The teeth have a skewed geometry to ensure minimal fibre pull and tearing of the wood. The bits are back tapered from the cutting edge to reduce friction and prevent binding and have been fully ground to give precise concentricity to ensure a highly accurate hole. For a while I had been waiting for these to be on offer again, so ordered them as soon as the price looked good. Also added some brad point bits for a very good price. Delivery from Rutlands is always quick. The only downside is that all the Forstner bits were in their own plastic bag (environmentally not good) and the foam that the bits sit on in the wooden box is not great quality and doesn't keep the bits very tightly in their place. I have ordered quite a few tools from Rutlands now and I like the quality, but the packaging tends to be a bit wasteful in terms of plastic bags.
I have not used the drill bits yet due to illness, but I'm confident they will perform well as usual.
Ordered these bits after buying other brands the last couple of years including trend. I found these bits to be far superior, they cut cleanly through mdf and hardwood. A very attractive price for the amount of bits and feel as though they'll last.
These drill bits are well made and perform exactly as expected. The quality is evident right out of the box, and they produce consistently clean, precise cuts with smooth edges and minimal tear-out. They track accurately, even when starting on uneven surfaces, and cut efficiently without excessive heat or chatter. Overall, they feel durable, reliable, and well-suited for both fine woodworking and general shop use. A solid purchase and good value for the quality provided.
Bought these as an upgrade to the ones I already own. First impressions are that they are real quality, they are delivered in their own individual plastic container, and upon first use they cut perfectly cleanly even on poor quality softwood. The size range is good, should be a bit most occasions. I would highly recommend.
I'm yet to buy anything from Rutlands that hasn't been extemporary. These are great and actually priced very competitively considering other manufacturers.
