Block Planes
Manufactured to British Standards, Rutlands® hand planes are recommended by discerning cabinetmakers and carpentry instructors for their superb construction, finish and performance. Using world leading manufacturing techniques, each precision ground plane represents a serious alternative to the premium brands produced in North America. The renowned design has a screw mechanism that easily allows the blade to be varied in depth relative to the sole to change the depth of cut.

No 101 Bronze Block Plane
A block plane is small enough to be used in one hand and is designed for cutting end grain and making trimming or fine adjustment cuts. This beautifully made miniature plane is designed for model makers, pattern makers and fine cabinet makers. It is favoured by luthiers for small scale precision work where a larger plane would be difficult to use or gain access. A 22mm wide, 25° bevelled blade is seated at 20° within the plane, giving an effective angle of 45° for general purpose work. The plane has an overall length of 87mm and weighs 200g.

Materials & Manufacturing
The plane body features a single bronze casting which is precision machined to ensure the soles are flat and square to the sides. The plane is fitted with a T10 high carbon steel tool blade which can take a keen edge, and that has been hardened to RC60-64 for maximum edge retention. The blade is held in position by a large bronze cap iron with an integrated palm rest which allows the plane to nestle snugly in the hand. ©

101 bronze apron plane

Ordered this little plane as was on offer
And couldn’t really resist
It’s a 101 so quite a bit smaller than a 102
Which I’ve always known as an apron plane
Despite its size it has it’s place in the workshop, especially for finer small work on beads and mitre details etc.
The body doesn’t react with my hands or when I’m working with oak as it’s bronze which is a bonus
Stays sharp for a fair time
And the blade required little backing off on the stone to be perfectly flat
Nice fine adjustment by **** so easy to set
All in all a very well made tool that sits under my bench ready for when needed!

Bronze block plane

It’s very similar to the lie Nielsen version, Violin makers plane, apart from the blade being standard carbon steel there’s not much difference.
