Block Planes
Manufactured to British Standards, Rutlands® hand planes are recommended by discerning cabinetmakers and carpentry instructors for their superb construction, finish and performance. Using world leading manufacturing techniques, each precision ground plane represents a serious alternative to the premium brands produced in North America. The renowned design has a screw mechanism that easily allows the blade to be varied in depth relative to the sole to change the depth of cut.

Low Angle Rebate Block Plane
A block plane is small enough to be used in one hand and is designed for cutting end grain and making trimming or fine adjustment cuts. This rebating block plane offers the end grain cutting capability of a low angle block plane and combines it with the flush cutting ability of a rebating plane. This gives a plane that will trim and finish end grain on difficult areas such as tenon shoulders. The plane has a modified body casting to make it more responsive in use and a finer pitch blade adjustment thread for improved blade setting accuracy. A 44mm wide, 25° bevelled blade is seated at 12° within the plane, giving an effective angle of 37° for end grain work. The plane has an overall length of 160mm and weighs 850g.

Materials & Manufacturing
The plane body features heavy, stress relieved ductile iron castings which are precision machined to ensure the soles are flat and square to the sides. The plane is fitted with a T10 high carbon steel tool blade which can take a keen edge, and that has been hardened to RC60-64 for maximum edge retention. The blade is held in position by a large bronze cap iron with an integrated palm rest which allows the plane to nestle snugly in the hand. ©

Money well spent

Great little rebate plane. Very impressive build and design quality apart from giving the iron a little tickle she worked from the box

60 1/2 low angle block plane

I’m really impressed with this, it has a really great feel in the hand and has a good weight to it that says ‘quality’. I have other luban/quangsheng tools namely fore#6, #4 1/2 smoother and this is just as nice. I opened the pack to find it sealed and oiled and began to check for flatness. The sole needed only a small amount of flattening starting at 400g up to 1200g. The blade was sharp but after an extra hone at 6000g and it cuts beautifully. It came nicely finished too no sharp edges etc. like others have said, the wheel to hold the blade is a bit fiddly but I don’t think it detracts from using it. Overall I’m impressed, I got it at sale price of £50 so brilliant value.

I'm so glad I bought this plane! It's beautiful. Well built and only took a little tuning. Sole was almost flat and blade just required a little honing. The blade is excellent quality and a nice thickness and the tool fits nicely in the hand (now now boys!). I will be buying more Luban tools as they are excellent value for money. Thanks again Rutlands!
