This honing guide sled allows for fast, consistent and accurate honing of wood chisels and plane irons. Precision CNC machined from aircraft grade aluminium the sliding carriage glides back and forth on a stainless steel bar, that travels through a housing which features 50 micro ball-bearings. These micro bearings ensure a smooth, effortless movement with no lateral play, allowing for consistent longitudinal movement over the length of the sharpening stone.

The head uses a clamping bar that registers on the face of the blade and accepts flat and tapered blades up to 9mm thick and 52mm wide. A series of parallel lines are etched onto the head to ensure the chisel or plane iron sits square to the jig. You can lock-off the head at your desired honing angle anywhere from 10-60° using an Allen key or as favoured by most, you can leave the head unlocked and simply copy the existing angle of the blade edge. The base of the jig accepts water stones from 160mm to 200mm in length and up to 80mm in width, held in position using the aluminium clamping block. Beautifully made from CNC machined aluminium combined with solid brass knurl screws this jig sits on four brass feet with rubber sole pads that prevent the sled from walking when sharpening.

This sled, unlike a traditional hand held honing guide eliminates any lateral or longitudinal play, allowing the blade to smoothly, consistently and accurately move over the sharpening stone. ©

Nice piece of kit

A great asset for sharpening tools, easy and quick to set up and use, and nicely made. Well done Rutlands!

Very well made guide

I was surprised at how well made this honing guide is, it has a linear rail and guide underneath making it very stable in use, the photos on the website are great but do not show underneath the guide, so I did not know what to expect, this works great as you can use the full length of the stone you are using

Beautifully made sharpening guide

Well made sharpening guide, my stones fit easily. The action is smooth with no play at all. It Is a bit fiddly to set the blades accurately, there are no angle markings, so I used a digital angle gauge.

Rutlands Honing Guide Sled

This honing guide is very well made.

Functionally speaking, I much prefer to have nothing but the tool being sharpened in contact with the abrasive surface, and this honing guide achieves that.
Being an engineer, I find the use of flat plates bolted together to construct the unit particularly appealing rather than a casting based approach.

It is reasonably sturdy, but I would prefer if it was constructed with Stainless Steel with a natural finish rather than Aluminium.

Its sliding operation is extremely slick with no discernable play in the mechanism.

This is a recent purchase, so no useful comment can be made at this time on the long-term durability of the item.

It effectively handles plane irons and flat chisels 16mm wide and beyond.
I have yet to try it with mortice chisels and narrow chisels sizes less than 16mm
with regard to how effectively these extremely proportioned tools can be appropriately aligned and secured.

I am very pleased with this purchase, and do wholeheartedly recommend it.

I will provide an update in due course if it is possible to update this post.

Another example of good design

As a retired professional engineer, I take pride in introducing young well qualified engineers to good design. I bought this sled for my own workshop because I'm fussy about my tool sharpening and this kit from Rutland looks like an example of perfect design. The construction is solid and the sliding movement has no slack in it. Had I still been working, I would be taking this into the office, as an example of good engineering.
