Product Details

This set features the three most popular rattan handle Japanese saws, Dozuki (R1000), Kataba (R1003) and Ryoba (R1006) complete with a traditional Japanese saw roll for storage and protection.

Japanese Saws
Made exclusively for Rutlands® by Gyokucho, the world's leading Japanese saw manufacturer, these saws have one stand out difference from their western counterparts; they cut on the pull stroke rather than the push stroke. The action of pulling the saw keeps the blade in tension through the cut, which allows the blade to be thinner and lighter, for a much smoother and faster cut. The narrow kerf means that the saw removes less material and requires far less energy to achieve a super-fine, tear free and clean cut. Each tooth is impulse hardened for superior sharpness and to stay sharper for longer. The teeth are symmetrically set to ensure straight, drift free sawing and the blades are electronically surface plated to minimise friction and prevent resin build up and corrosion.

Dozuki
This Dozuki saw features ultra-thin, universal teeth for sawing across, along and diagonally to the grain. Due to the finest of kerfs, Dozuki saws are indispensable for cutting dovetails and other fine joints and for making precise shoulder and crosscuts. The universal tooth pattern allows for the rip-cut of pins and the crosscut of side pins when making dovetails in both hard and soft wood. A reinforced back stabilises the 0.3mm ultra-thin, 240mm long blade to ensure backlash free saw blade guidance for straight, chatter free performance.

Kataba
Kataba saws have slightly thicker blades, that are very robust and not require a reinforcing back, allowing for deep cuts flush to the surface and for long cuts on large workpieces. This Kataba has a 240mm blade with impulse hardened, trapezoidal teeth for cutting across and diagonal to the grain. Each tooth is sharpened on three edges in an alternating pattern to cleanly slice, rather than tear the wood fibres leaving an extremely clean, smooth finish. The tooth geometry is excellent at clearing the kerf to prevent clogging. With its wear resistant, super hard teeth this Kataba saw will perform trimming, shoulder and flush cuts in hardwoods, exotic and tropical hardwoods, soft woods, particle boards and glued woods.

Ryoba
The Ryoba is the most versatile Japanese saw for cabinetmaking and joinery as the blade has two different tooth patterns to allow for both crosscut and rip work. This Ryoba has a 240mm blade with impulse hardened, trapezoidal teeth for cutting across and diagonal to the grain on one side and triangular teeth for ripping along the grain on the opposite side. The trapezoidal teeth are sharpened on three edges in an alternating pattern to cleanly slice, rather than tear the wood fibres leaving an extremely clean, smooth finish. The triangular rip teeth become progressively finer from tip to tang to make starting the cut easier and to use less force as the stroke progresses. Ryoba saws have slightly thicker blades, that are very robust and not require a reinforcing back, allowing for deep cuts flush to the surface and for long cuts on large workpieces in hardwood, softwood and particle board.

Rattan Handle
Traditional in style, the blade is mounted on a lightweight wooden handle for fatigue free working and is wrapped in rattan for excellent comfort, breathability and hold. Made in Miki City, Japan, these premium Japanese saws have lifetime warranty and in the event that they should fail due to a material or manufacturing defect will be replaced free of charge. ©

Having not used but always admired the Japanese way of looking at things I thought I'd give them a try. Bit, am I glad I did. Super thin blades that can't buckle or bow as they cut on the pull stroke, simple! The finish of the cut is excellent on both the crosscut and the rip blade. Fantastic build quality, light and effortless to use. The next thing to try is the hollow back chisel.

One of if not the best saws i have used strong and the control the handles give you are amazing perfect tool for beginner to the
Professional

Simon Harrison

Love these saws. Great cutting, accurate, and very clean. Quick delivery as always.

My first Japanese saws and I'm super impressed. Fast, clean, precise cutting straight out of the box despite years of using traditional western saws. The Kerr is amazingly fine too, a little too narrow to get my feet saw blade in to remove most of the waste when cutting dovetails. I've only had them a few days, looking forward to using them more.
I bought them on one of the daily deals and so they were super value too

I was looking for a set of Japanese saws for a long while but I couldn't make up my mind. I am so glad I took the plunge, they are a great addition to my workshop and the difference between them and a tenon saw, wow, cutting on the pull stroke is so much easier! I think they are well made and I must say well done to Rutlands excellent quality.

Being a chippy/cabinet maker I like to use decent professional tools I have many saws and do get through a fair few. This is the second set of Japanese pull saws purchased and I plan to replace all my saws with these as they are accurate and stay sharp 10 times longer than the average conventional saw costing around the same money. I am particularly please with the integrity of the kerf and set remaining true which is important. Being entirely happy with Rutlands tools and customer services ce a shall use them for most of my tools in the future

I finally took the plunge for this set of saws due to the daily price drop after looking at them for a long time. If I was paying full price I might have opted for the rubber handle set but the traditional rattan handles give good grip even if they feel a little 'unfinished' at the end. It may take some getting used to the pull technique with the relatively short blade length compared to a western panel saw but it is amazing how accurately you can follow a line with the floppy ryoba blade. I haven't used all the saws for all their functions yet but so far seems a good buy. There are loads of instructive clips available of Japanese carpenters using these saws and most of them seem to be sat or squatting on the floor - hope this isn't compulsory with my knees!

I needed to cut 2 inch thick oak accurately and because of the needs of the job it could not be done on my table saw. I bought the Japanese saw guide to assist me and this set of saws because at least one, the Kataba, could be used with the saw guide.

I was very impressed with the results. The saw guide was a big help and the Kataba saw was a joy to work with. The cut was fine, smooth and accurate.

I have used the other saws as well and they are great to use, particularly if you are doing precision work on larger pieces of wood.

I am doing more small tenons by hand of late and I think I might buy the compact set for that extra degree of precision.

I have only just starting using Rutlands but I did find their service impressive - next day really does mean next day.

Peter Walker

I've never used any other japanese or pull saws before but I have to say, these are stunningly impressive.

Slightly offputting when you first receive them as they are somewhat larger than you would imagine from looking at the pictures and you might mistake them for a set of murder weapons! The other disconcerting things is that the blades are rather thin and you may find that they don't appear to be perfectly straight.

These concerns disappear as soon as you use them though: they cut with ease through wood and leave a beautifully clean cut, even in my amateur hands. Regarding the blades not being straight, this is a function of them being thin and being designed to cut on the pull stroke; under the light tension of a gentle pull stroke they cut in a straight line.

Would recommend highly.

i've used japanese tools for s few years now and must say these are the best saws i've owned. i'm now trying to resist the temptation of some of the other tools.

R Kennedy

Never used a pull saw before so these took a little bit of getting used to but even in my inexperienced hands the result was still impressive. The saws are so sharp and seem to glide through whatever I'm cutting whether its delicate moulding or thick boards.

George Anglis

As a woodcarver this is my first set of decent Japanese saws and I am so happy I purchased them. They are great to use. The thin blades and the selection of cutting grades makes cutting so much easier compared to traditional saws. The quality of the saws is great. I would highly recommend this set for all types of accurate work.

Paul Hardy

Having used western style hand saws for over 20 years I was slightly sceptical about the benefits of Japanese saws. All I can say is I wish I had been told about them 20 years ago. They are in a different league to any saw I have used. The blades are really thin which means you are removing less wood and therefore have to exert less force. The action of cutting on the pull stroke keeps the blade perfectly straight and the teeth are individually set to act like a series of planes, shaving the wood away. Brilliant and I will never go back to a conventional saw.

Ronald Kelly

I'd been hanging my nose over a potential Japanese saw set purchase for some time. Rutland had some great looking ones on their site but had sold out. Fortunately, the Rutland team let me know when they had re-stocked and I took the plunge. Never used Japanese saws before. Have found the way they cut suits me better than the traditional wood saw. Finally cutting straight and boy are these ones sharp. Wish I'd bought them long before.

Hovick Boughosyan

My first foray into Japanese saws and I am very happy I tried them. They are such a joy to use, the thin blade kerf makes cutting so much easier vs traditional western saws. The quality of the saws are great. Would recommend.

Steven Gilmore

As a cabinet maker these saws have become priceless to me. Whether you are cutting hardwoods or veneered boards, these will leave you wondering "how did i ever got on without them".
