These turning tools are made from M2 high-speed steel which has been cryogenically hardened, to ensure an extremely long service life. Cryogenic hardening is a technical process, where the steel is cooled down to -185°C after hardening, resulting in an edge that will last up to 5 times longer than conventionally hardened high-speed steel. This process makes the tools ideal for turning oily abrasive woods, exotic woods, green and hard woods, allowing the turner to turn wood rather than spend time re-sharpening the blade. The blades have a super fine cutting edge with reduced burr formation, which results in a clean, smooth finish and a superior feel in use. The blades are remarkably fast and easy to sharpen, as they allow you to remove less material than before to produce a perfect razor sharp edge. The blades are hardened to HRC63-65 and are ready to use, having been bevelled, sharpened and polished.

The full-size handles are ergonomically designed to allow for optimum grip and comfort and are made from a slow growing beech that has been selected for its straight grain, to ensure maximum strength. The shanks of the high-speed steel blades are buried deep into the beech handles and secured by a solid stainless steel ferrule.

With their straighter profile and deeper flute, bowl gouges are well suited to rapid stock removal and the hollowing out of open, shallow vessels. The semi-circular back allows for the tool to be rolled from one edge to the other though the cut ensuring a clean finish. These are excellent full-size woodturning tools. ©

Very impressed with the service

I had been to the Rutland site many times over the years but never placed an order because a company you can't reach by phone in 2024, didn't fill me with confidence! A few days ago I reached out to the support service and the response was very quick. On the bases of that I placed an order from two Bowl Gouges. The product arrived in impeccable packaging and in perfect condition. After sharpening the Gouges, both have performed exceptionally well. Excellent edge keeping, best price per inch of flute

Better than any of the other gouges I have from 4 different manufacturers at keeping its edge. As my other gouges wear out, I will replace with these, to sharpen at different angles.
And I will be glad to do so as I get more usable flute per pound paid then on any other major manufacturer's.
The only slight drawback for some might be that it has a shorter handle than other ½“/⅜“ gouges. I guess it's possible this might be because the tang is shorter so this gouge might not stand up to particularly stressful use.

A very well made tool, cut straight away

A very well made tool, cut straight away from taking out of the packaging. I t works better now I have put my own angles on it. i would recommend this tool to any turner. Priced very well will check Rutland's first next time tooling is required.
