FULL DESCRIPTION
These turning tools are made from M2 high-speed steel which has been cryogenically hardened, to ensure an extremely long service life. Cryogenic hardening is a technical process, where the steel is cooled down to -185°C after hardening, resulting in an edge that will last up to 5 times longer than conventionally hardened high-speed steel. This process makes the tools ideal for turning oily abrasive woods, exotic woods, green and hard woods, allowing the turner to turn wood rather than spend time re-sharpening the blade. The blades have a super fine cutting edge with reduced burr formation, which results in a clean, smooth finish and a superior feel in use. The blades are remarkably fast and easy to sharpen, as they allow you to remove less material than before to produce a perfect razor sharp edge. The blades are hardened to HRC63-65 and are ready to use, having been bevelled, sharpened and polished.

The full size handles are ergonomically designed to allow for optimum grip and comfort and are made from a slow growing beech that has been selected for its straight grain, to ensure maximum strength. The shanks of the high-speed steel blades are buried deep into the beech handles and secured by a solid stainless steel ferrule.

Used mainly during spindle work to take the corners off square stock and make it round, the roughing gouge can also be used to produce shallow sweeping coves. These are excellent full-size woodturning tools. ©

Nice gouge

I bought the gouge in a set of three. received them very quickly and packaged well. Lovely handles and all gouges were well sharpened.
Inly used it a couple of times and looking forward to getting some more use.

Very nice indeed

A very nice roughing gouge. The beech handle is a great shape and nicely finished. The raw-like finish used is pleasing - I personally this kind of finish to stained wooden handles.

The tool itself looks great. Holds its edge wells and sharpens well.

I have a few Rutlands chisels and will certainly be using Rutlands again for woodturning chisels. Excellent quality, especially when compared to some of the well-known brands.

I am happy with of choice of Rutlands over some other brands I was considering.

Customer service and delivery excellent also.

As a newbie - they are fantastic

Being new to woodturning I wanted a set of gouges without paying the earth.
Rutlands offer of three for two piqued my interest and after a little research on Cryogenic over HSS I took the plunge
Result, a set of very well packaged gouges with superb wooden handles and already sharp edge. However, a few minutes honing and polishing on a friend's Tormek sharpening system resulted in an ultra sharp gouge that does not lose its edge
I would certainly recommend these gouges - even my more knowledgeable colleagues are impressed with these gouges
