FULL DESCRIPTION
R1 Lathe Six Speeds - 305mm x 535mm
This premium performance lathe is designed for the discerning woodturner or more ambitious newcomer and should not be compared with low cost, budget lathes. The level of vibration on this lathe is exceptionally low, due to the substantial grey iron castings which have the mass needed to dampen and absorb vibration. The castings are CNC machined to exacting tolerances to ensure perfect alignment of the headstock and tailstock and to allow for the smooth movement of the tool rest holder and tailstock along the length of the bed.

The drive spindle is precisely aligned and runs in extra wide roller bearings to ensure class-leading concentricity. The drive spindle has a 1"" x 8tpi thread with a No 2 morse taper for the fitting of industry standard chucks and attachments. The tailstock has No 2 morse taper which is hollowed out to accept drill bits when turning lampstands that require electric cable to be passed through. You can turn bowls up to 305mm and spindles up to 535mm , which can be extended to 1230mm with the optional bed extension. The lathe is powered by a 550W high torque, induction motor which is extremely quiet in use, even at maximum speed and under full load.

A non-slip, poly V belt, efficiently transmits power from the motor to the step pulleys, resulting in six spindle speeds of 460, 660, 1040, 1560, 2270 & 2900 rpm, allowing you to select the correct speed to suit small, medium and large turnings. To change speeds you simply raise the motor to slacken off the belt and then reposition the belt on a different step of the pulley. The reverse rotation is ideal for sanding and polishing when final finishing. The 150mm tool rest is held firmly in the non-slip banjo and will not wander when roughing out or turning large bowls and platters.

All of the adjustment handles are ergonomic and can be locked off to prevent obstruction with the turning tool. The lathe comes complete with a revolving centre, four prong centre, face plate, knock out rod and spindle locking wrenches . This lathe is ideal for bowl and platter turning, goblet, vase and egg cup turning, pen turning and all between centres work. This is a precisely machined, premium performance lathe that is extremely quiet in operation, virtually vibration free and features six speeds.

Precision 75 Woodturning Chuck
The new Precision 75 Woodturning Chuck is engineered to ensure that the workpiece sits as close as possible to the headstock, therefore reducing load and minimizing wear on the main spindle bearing. This chuck is extremely strong and durable, as it is machined from a special grade of medium-tensile steel, which is normally used for the manufacture of high performance turbo impellors, pistons and gears. Using this steel allows for closer tolerances during the manufacturing process which results in excellent concentricity to minimize vibration and to ensure that a chatter-free, super fine finish can be achieved by the woodturner. It is the latest advancement in work holding systems for discerning woodturners. Precision engineered and beautifully balanced, it offers superior performance combined with rock-solid holding power and excellent load bearing capability.

The chuck is specifically designed so the jaws cut into the wood to provide a class leading clamping force, unlike other woodturning chucks that use engineering jaw profiles which crush the wood fibres and do not grip the workpiece as securely. The precision machined scroll mechanism and the high ratio gearing combine to ensure for a strong grip irrespective of workpiece size. The four jaws open and close using a T-handled key, allowing for one handed operation, leaving one hand free to support and balance your workpiece when mounting and dis-mounting the workpiece. Measuring 70mm in diameter, this chuck can be used on all sizes of lathe from large capacity professional lathes through to midi and mini lathes.

The chuck kit contains the Precision 75 chuck body, 50mm dovetail jaws, 65mm faceplate ring, 35mm pin jaws and screw chuck. This wide array of jaws allows for all popular turning projects including; spindles, bowls, goblets, candlesticks, pepper mills, pens and pencils up to 20kg and more. The chuck and jaws are presented in a box set, which features a dedicated foam cut out to aid protection when not in use. ©

Great lathe.

I'm new to woodturning so I decided after much research to buy this lathe, I'm not disappointed it is very quiet and heavy so hardly any vibration and changing the belt to adjust the speed is very easy,a very good quality machine

Bought as a first lathe

Bought as a first lathe and my first foray into woodturning. Easy to setup and not too intimidating to use. I was making sawdust in no time and several hours later had produced my first hardwood pens, very happy. Runs exceptionally quiet and with minimal, if any, vibration on the bench. Not used the reverse function yet, but pleased to see its presence on a lathe at this level. Have only changed the belt configuration once or twice, but found this to be straightforward and no hassle. I look forward to continuing my turning journey and adding more jaws and fitments to my arsenal. Highly recommended from a beginner.

Excellent service from Rutlands

Excellent service from Rutlands and a very patient customer service rep who handled my barrage of questions with great patience. Spent a lot of time looking for my first lathe and I am very happy to have landed on this particular model, it is not nearly as limiting as I thought it would be. It arrived promptly the morning after placing my order and arrived well packaged within 2 boxes, requiring a small amount of assembly. The lathe has been a pleasure to use so far, and my first few projects (bottle stoppers) have turned out excellent. Lovely little lathe and an excellent introduction to the hobby.

Very quiet and inoffensive to the ears

Very quiet and inoffensive to the ears unlike most woodworking machinery! Perfect for a small workshop where space is tight. Looking forward to learning how to use it fully over the next few months in time for creating some Christmas decorations. Seems robust and very well made.
