This is an exceptional woodturning lathe. Compared to many other bench top lathes it has greater work holding capacity allowing for 305mm bowl turning and 610mm spindle turning and has the advantage that you can extend the bed at a later stage to increase spindle turning to 1300mm. It is powered by a high torque, DC motor which is extremely quiet in use, even at maximum speed and under full load. A non-slip poly V belt efficiently transmits power from the motor whilst the motor controller automatically increases the level of torque to maintain the speed, as load on the workpiece is increased.

The two step pulley, in conjunction with the variable speed control results in two speed ranges of 250 to 1300rpm and 700 to 3450rpm, allowing you to fine tune the speed to suit small, medium and large turnings. The digital read out is ideally positioned on the tailstock to offer perfect visibility. The level of vibration is remarkable low, due to the substantial grey iron castings which have the mass needed to dampen and absorb vibration. The cast iron headstock is CNC machined for the precise alignment of the drive spindle and the extra wide roller bearings, ensuring class leading concentricity.

The drive spindle has a 1" x 8tpi thread with a No 2 morse taper to allow for the fitting industry standard chucks and attachments. The tailstock has No 2 morse taper which is hollowed out to accept drill bits when turning standard and bed side lamps. The tool rest is held firmly in the non-slip banjo and will not wander when roughing out or turning large bowls and platters. The bed of the lathe is finely ground for smooth tool rest positioning. All of the adjustment handles are ergonomic and can be locked off to prevent obstruction with the turning tool.

The lathe comes complete with a revolving centre, four prong centre, face plate, knock out rod and spindle locking wrenches . This lathe is ideal for bowl and platter turning, goblet, vase and egg cup turning, pen turning and all between centres work. The reverse rotation is ideal for sanding and polishing when final finishing. Excellent Product

After hours of reviewing different lathes and models online and asking friends and fellow turners I decided to go with this one. It was within my budget and I had purchased other machinery from Rutlands in the past that had always been good quality. I liked the variable speed feature of this lathe and its longer spindle turning capacity. I opted for the 75 chuck as well as it seems a solid piece of kit. i haven't turned much on the lathe yet but it is so smooth and quiet, you can barely hear it running.

Spent that bit extra for the convenience

Spent that bit extra for the convenience of the variable speed and longer bed, which is certainly worth it. Feels like a top quality machine, well-engineered and the finish is excellent. The centres were aligned perfectly out of the box and the tool rest feels sturdy and substantial. I bought the chuck package as I had already inherited a set of decent chisels, and the quality of the chuck is excellent also. Looking forward to many years of service on this lathe.

Bought to replace an inferior lathe

Bought to replace an inferior lathe which made woodturning an exercise in frustration. This, on the other hand, is an absolute joy to use and makes me realise what I have been missing. Incredibly easy to use, even the grandson has been enjoying it. Superb service and speedy delivery from Rutlands my love for turning has been rekindled!

Been running this lathe for around a month

Been running this lathe for around a month now and it has not missed a beat so far. The quality is excellent for the money and all of the woodturning gear I have purchased since has been top notch. Speed control works well and the spindle turns absolutely true and steady. I already have orders for Christmas gifts! One very happy customer.

An absolute gem of a lathe...

An absolute gem of a lathe. It runs extremely quietly and there is simply no vibration through the castings. It is in a different league to my old Tyme Cub lathe. Turned a bowl form a Bubinga blank that was way out of true and the lathe did not stall or slow when initially roughing out. It seemed to relish the challenge. Highly impressed.
