The Rutlands® R4 variable speed lathe is ideal for the smaller workshop, offering the same exceptional build quality and performance as its larger counterparts, only in a compact, more portable package. Perfectly suited to those with limited workshop space, the R4 lathe is designed for smaller scale projects, whether turning pens, goblets, pepper mills or bowls.
The robust, CNC machined grey cast iron components ensure vibration-free turning and controllable, enjoyable operation. The maximum working diameter is 203mm and the distance between centres is 305mm. Supplied with the lathe are two solid cast iron tool rests, 115mm and 177mm in length, providing support whether faceplate turning or performing longer, between centre work. All banjo, tool rest and tailstock adjustments are made using ergonomic locking levers which can be positioned safely out of the way to prevent obstruction whilst turning.
The 300W motor provides ample power for smaller scale projects and operates within a variable speed range of 750 - 3200 rpm. The non-slip poly V belt ensures efficient power transmission and an incredibly smooth and quiet forward drive. Easy to use, the full speed range is operated from a single variable speed knob, requiring no repositioning of the drive belt. The drive spindle is precisely aligned and runs in extra wide roller bearings to ensure class-leading concentricity. The drive spindle has a 1" x 8tpi thread with a No 1 morse taper for the fitting of industry standard chucks and attachments. The tailstock has a No 1 morse taper for accepting live centres and drill chucks and is hollowed out to accept drill bits for long hole boring.
Requiring very minimal assembly, the lathe is ready to use in minutes and weighing only 20kg with a 730 x 150mm footprint, can be easily stowed away when not in use. Supplied with the lathe is a face plate, spur centre, live centre, knockout tool and 177mm and 155mm tool rests. ©

I've just unboxed the lathe. Only 10 minutes to get it put together. It's a lovely piece of kit. I am not likely to become a full-time woodturner, but as a tool to have on hand for the odd times I need it, it's perfect. It's light enough to put to one side when I'm not using it, but solid enough to do its job.
After a couple of lessons I bought the R4 lathe and chuck to get me going as a hobby turner. The quality and function is fantastic and has allowed me to complete several projects in my first week. Having reviewed many options this bundle is an absolute bargain. Highly recommend for any novice turner or as a second lathe for smaller projects. As per many other reviews the service from Rutlands is spot on.
We needed a small light little lathe for our Woodturning club to take to shows. This fitted the bill perfectly and combined with the great value special deal chuck combo hasn’t broken the bank either.
Unfortunately, the plastic cowl protecting the headstock bearing came with a crack in it. Rutland help desk quickly provided an acceptable solution. This is quite a fragile piece of plastic, so care will be needed in the future. The rest of the lathe works extremely well and although light in weight does seem to be quite robust. An excellent value little machine.

I do a lot of DIY, always have but I’ve never had a lathe or used one since my schooldays in the woodwork shop….been hooked on wood since those days! So I thought start with a small lathe and see how it goes. My shed is packed at the moment so I need to sort it out…chuck some stuff that is! I’ve unpacked, cleaned and checked all bits and pieces and turned it on, all is ok as expected. I now need to use some of the stored wood to build a hefty stand for the lathe and mini grinder I bought a while ago. I’m looking forward to getting a better, tidier workshed and starting a new pastime of turned creations! I’ll also be able to take more, understandable notice of the turning experts at the Northern Woodwork Show in Harrogate. Thank you again Rutlands!👏
