FULL DESCRIPTION
Made in Germany, the blades on these carving tools are made from a premium quality, hand forged chrome vanadium tool steel, which has high resistance to metal fatigue and will last a lifetime if given normal care when relief or round carving. Each blade is hardened to Rc61 along its entire length, resulting in a blade that will hold and retain a sharp, fine edge, over the life of the tool, without becoming brittle when sharpened. The blades are finely polished to achieve a mirror finish to minimise friction when roughing out or adding fine detail. The blade and tang are forged from one piece of steel, which is seated deeply into the chisel handle for strength and durability. The tools are fully honed and ready for use or you can add your preferred bevel angle by further grinding.

The handles are made from slow growing beech selected for its straight grain and strength. The octagonal shape ensures a secure, comfortable grip and prevents the tools rolling on the bench. Every handle is permanently engraved with the blade's pattern number and size for easy identification. The tools measure approximately 240mm overall in length with a handle length of 130mm. ©

Good sturdy gouge

I like this gouge. It feels strong yet comfortable in the hand. I can put some pressure on with confidence. The size suits my work, small to medium sized pieces in the round.
I also like the hexagon shape handle. It won't roll away so easily, like my old

I am very much a beginner to carving and have been using a mixture of cheap and old carving tools. On the advice of a very experienced carver I purchased one Pfeil gouge at great cost. The difference in terms of ease of use and edge holding is enormous. The various profiles in the set are exactly what I was recommended to get and I have found them equal in performance to the Pfeil. In short this set is, to me, equally as good as my Pfeil and at a very reasonable price. I have no idea why a previous reviewer thought the price 'perhaps a little high' because according to my very experienced friend they are exceptional value for the money.

I have just bought five gouges from Rutlands and they are as good as you can get from any other well known chisels and gouges and the price is perfect half the price of every one else and by far 1St glass Chisels. May I say they are very robust and very well made. You can not fault them at all and I will be buying more, as I go along. I was not expecting this quality for this price. If you just buy one you will see what I mean, for quality and price. 10 out of 10 without a doubt.

This was my first purchase of a few carving tools from Rutlands. My first impressions are that they are very well made with a nice handle and high quality blade. I asked for advice from my woodcarving fanatic friend and he recommended I should spend a few minutes grinding and sharpening the tools before first use in order to get the most out of them. I obliged and I am glad that I did, I have been able to carve over the course of a week without having to resharpen, the blades hold an edge very well.
